Is the Note 10.1 REALLY this fussy about Chargers?

I have had my Note 10.1 for just a week and I am really pleased. Battery life seems OK compared to smart phones I have had and, like them, I put it on charge every night (battery down to between 10 and 40 percent). I use the standard Samsung Mains charger and it has always been 100 percent fully charged in the morning.

However I have been unable to get the Note to charge at all using any other charger.

Granted most of the mains/USB chargers that I have are rated at 5V and between 0.5 and 1.2A as opposed to the standard chargers 5V/2A. However I would expect them to charge the Note - only more slowly. But none of them charge at all. The Battery Icon is green with a Red Cross and using a Battery App it reports "USB connected" but the battery continues to report "Discharging" when the cable is plugged it. This is a minor inconvenience as I have one Note 10.1 and one charger. So as long as I plug the charger in where I need it then it's OK.

However there is a much bigger problem. I also would like to keep the Note charged while I am out and about and travelling. To this end I already have two portable USB chargers which I use with a range of devices. A Powergen 8400MAh portable battery pack with two outlets. One of which is 5V/2A. This should be enough for a single full charge of the Note's 7000MAh battery. The second is a Car Charger (std 12V socket input) with two outputs the higher rated one being 5V/2.1A. Both of these are specified as being suitable for an "iPad"! Both chargers work, using the high power ports, with many other devices.

However neither of these will charge the Note 10.1. Behaviour is exactly the same as with the non-Samsung mains chargers I have tried.

This issue has not been reported before in this forum. If this is "normal" for a Note 10.1 surely it would have been. Does anyone have any ideas?

PS. In all cases I have used the same standard USB cable as supplied in the Note 10.1 pack.

If your other chargers are mobile phone chargers their just not big enough, I think you need one rated at around 2 amps to get a standard charge time. I plug mine into some laptop usb's and I get run, but no charge.

Not true again. I have a 2.1A charger and it does not work. It has been like that since Tab 10.1

Samsung has changed some pins i n their plugs and thus other chargers do not work unless used with a special adapter. Cost around 5USD.
Well I am getting rather confused. Are you saying that no standard USB chargers work directly with the Note 10.1? But many advertise compatability with the Note 10.1 and some of them are recommended in this forum.

So are you saying that every charger needs a "Samsung 30pin" to USB-A (female) OTG connector and then a standard USB-A (male to male) cable? I have one of these adaptors in the post so should be able to test this in a couple of days. Or are you refering to some other "special adaptor". In which case it would be appreciated if you could provide a link.

But then an interesting observation. If the power pins are changed, they must be in both the charger block and the cable. However if I use the Samsung charger block and plug in any standard cable - USB-A to USB mini or USB-A to USB micro they work with no problems to charge other phones that I have Samsung and HTC. This seems to indicate that Samsung's block has the normal standard USB charging pin configuration? If they had changed the configuration would the plug still be able to show the official USB three-pronged symbol (which it does)?

Anyway hopefully I will have a solution when my ordered additional adaptors and cables arrive.

I am not talking about "mobile phone chargers" but specifically USB power adaptors. If you read my post you will see that I have tried USB adators with outputs from 0.5 all the way to 2.1 Amps. The Note 10.1 offical adaptor supplies 5V at 2.0 amps. It can only, as Szadzik indicates, a pin configuration issue.

Are you using any external charger with your Note 10.1? If so I would be interested in your reply.

It is a pinout problem.

Here is what you need:

Edit:

The issue is being talked about here:

As for 3rd party chargers dedicated for Note 10.1 they might work if they have been manufactured specifically for that device.

Black Power Charging Data Sync USB Adapter Cable For Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 | eBay
Szadzik, many thanks. I see that this adaptor has an extra (switching?) device. So presumably the straight through USB adaptors listed here (and that I have bought) look like they won't work if power is involved.

Will check when my order arrives and if needed order two of these for my Power Block and car charger.

Yes, the switch is to change between charging and sync mode.
