Convince me not to get an iphone.....what can you do with your Droid?

I am currently using a Palm Treo 755p from VZ. I am in the market for a new phone. Part of me really likes the iphone, but I also like the coverage that I get with VZ. I have never had ATT but am told that their coverage comes close to VZ in my area. So tell me what you do most with your Droid and what are some of your favorite apps? I know that the iphone has several thousand apps more than the Droid and this is one reason why I am having such a hard time deciding. Thanks for any input

And, Apple has quite a bit more than "several thousand" apps than Android....however, I would challenge you find something you want to be able to do with an Android phone that you can't. You're coming from a Palm device....a Blackberry Storm would almost be better than that!

In my mind one reason to get an android phone is flash. Iphone will not be recieving flash. Flash will open up alot of things like being able to play flash games online, for me, I will be able to access my fantasy baseball leagues.

Android is better.
Reasons the Droid is better than the iPhone:
*More Storage (can hold up to a 32GB SD card, and you can have as many Storage cards as you want or need)
*More Battery Life (7hr vs 5hr talk time)
*Better Camera (5mp vs 3mp)
*The iPhone can only run one program on the front, programs run in the background are in a sleep mode. The Droid can run unlimited programs "in the back ground" (though you will sacrifice speed)
*Droid is cheaper (@ non-contract price, it may or may not be @ contract price depending on specials on the Droid - the iPhone never has specials - or your location)
*you can customize the Droid's background with pics, the iPhone is just black (you can put any pic as your lock screen)
*you can customize the exact layout of Droid, iPhone you can only customize which screen things are on
*Droid app are cheaper (most are free, only very specialty apps will cost you)
*Droid interfacing and dynamic updating of your email contacts and calendar is seamless and free, iPhone you must pay for MobileMe
*Droid has a keyboard! (It also has an on-screen keyboard)
*"Jailbreaking" a Droid is more legal than doing so with an iPhone

Of course, most of this is true with ANY android phone vs the iPhone (well except the ones on AT&T, but that is a whole 'nother thread)

Well, if that's what you want (comparing Android with iPhone), then wait till April 8, 2010. Apple will announce iPhone OS 4.0, which should be for their upcoming iPhone model (June/July???).

Anyway, Android is pretty decent OS. You can do so much more that current iPhone can do (e.g. multitasking, personalization, customization, freedom of choice, etc.). The user interface is good and finger friendly. There are many hardware choices as well. These are the basic differences.

However, iPhone has more decent quality apps, especially GAMES. If you are into games, then Android may lack. This is the area where iPhone beat Android (at least for now).

If I were you, I would wait the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement

PS: I don't own iPhone and I jumped ship from WM to Android (HTC Desire, ordered).

What I can do with my N1 (the same would apply to a Droid) that an iPhone can't:

1) Download files in the background with Dropbox, Tube Downloader, the market, upload a batch of photos through the gallery, or... all four at once! All this while streaming music, viewing google maps, and having several windows open in the browser. No, the phone doesn't slow down. Oh, yeah, and I can download things directly through a browser. Like on a real computer. No, you can't click links and download things on the iPhone's browser.

2) Use it as a giant USB stick. iTunes? Piss on it. I plug my phone in. Mount, drag, drop, done. No bloatware needed. No fumbling around with an adapter. Standard ports are beautiful things.

3) Oops. My internet connection is down. Oh well, toggle my phone's data connection on, plug it in, tether. Voila, my PC's now online again.

4) I'd like to try out some alternative browsers. I go to the market, download Dolphin/Steel/Opera Mini and install. On the iPhone, you're stuck with Safari mobile forever. Sorry, Steve Jobs doesn't believe in free will and choices.

5) Don't like the default look of Android? Get a home replacement and make your homescreens look like webOS, or Sense-skinned WinMo, or whatever. Have your screen transition turn into a 3D cube. Enable rotation for your launcher. Theme everything blue. Theme everything pink. There's something for everybody (within limits; if you want more, you'd have to root--but even without rooting, an Android phone's customizability crushes the iPhone's one-icon-grid-for-all "I'm a sheep, baa, baa" look to a pulp).

There's plenty more, but these are some of the more fundamental, basic things.

I think its funny people using the number of apps as a major reason. I mean, over 30,000 apps currently not enough for you? Its not like you'll get through all those in a day, or your lifetime.

Instead of taking the shotgun approach why not post what you're looking for? We could then tell you how the Droid could possibly fit that specific need. What I (or anyone) do with my Droid may have no relevance to what you're looking for in a smartphone.

I can't stand "convince me" threads on any forum site. They always smack of lack of research. People need to convince themselves based on their own needs and wants -- not the needs/wants of others.

You certainly don't need iTunes but you can sync with it, if desired. My primary media device is an iPod so I do rely on iTunes. iTunes Agent works really well for syncing the Droid with iTunes. There are, of course, other options as well. The real plus in Android's court is that you have choices more than "no need for iTunes" IMO.

There's no direct relationship but in general the greater the number of apps the greater the odds for better apps.

I'd suggest just trying the Droid. You can read all you want but you can't beat first hand experience for assessing how well a device suits you. You have 30 days to return it if it's not your cup of tea and you can still consider the new iPhone if you really want to go with at&t.

However, you really need to assess the suitability of at&t's coverage and network while you're in the window where you can cancel, should you choose to go that route. Don't assume that coverage maps are 100% accurate. I've lived in plenty of areas with "good" coverage on the map and no usable signal (indoor or out).

Having come from that platform after using it for close to ten years, trust me when I tell you that the Storm IS an upgrade.

@Smudgie: You really want to do some digging (reviews, youtube, etc) to see which platform suites your specific needs better. That being said, having come from Palm I found Google's calender and contacts to be comparable to what I had with my Treo 700p. I also found the multi-tasking and larger screen to be a nice boon, without sacrificing things you may be taking for granted with the ability to upgrade or change out the battery or SD card; I'm not sure that those are corners you'll be happy cutting.

If we updated that song it would be "Anything the iPhone Can Do the Android Phone Can Do Better".
Forget the iPhone - shop around for an Android based phone - and enjoy. It will be a decision you won't regret.

I have been using the iphone lately but have recently convinced myself that I will be getting htc evo when it comes out. The only concern about making the switch is with podcasts. I listen to a lot of them everyday on the iphone and I love how I don't have to manually drop them in to sync.. it automatically just deletes the ones ive heard or watched, then auto puts new ones on. All of this through itunes.

Is this something that the android can do? It won't be a deal breaker for me but I would miss the seamless intergration, without the need to do the manual work of managing the podcasts.

I cant believe you actually recommended the N900. Seriously, that phone is only for hackers and not for the average person. Sara, you'd be so much better off with an iPhone. It's dummy proof. But if you're smart enough to know what phones are made of, Android offers so much more albeit with less cosmetics.

The apps and the community developing all these apps is so very diverse and the functionality and innovation is unsurpassed. Notice how blackberry and iPhone all rushed to include "apps" as soon as android came out, that's because android can do anything the iPhone can plus tons of cool stuff, more and more everyday. It's fast, it's integrated, and the new firmware has an amazing navigational framework between all the different functions. You can load an address right into your GPS enabled google maps straight from the business listing in a google websearch result.

How about the network? Verizon is much better than AT&T. If you want to go with Verizon, get the Desire. However, if Sprint has good coverage where you are, I would wait for the HTC EVO 4G

Honestly I've only test driven an iPhone. So with all the hype it amazes me how day after day I find out all this stuff it can't do as compared to Android. Either I read it somewhere or I do something with my phone and my coworker is like "oh....you can do that?" or they mention something and I say "oh....you CAN'T do that???". It really seems to me that the iPhone is almost pointless compared to Android. I'd admit that if you're a heavy user the first gen Android phones could possibly aggravate you with lag vs smoother operation by the iPhone. But the phones from what looks like the Droid on up....well...I wouldn't bother with an iPhone at all.

And half the features announced for the iPhone OS 4.0 were already in Android. I think alot of iFans in the know are kinda upset that this is only a catch up release. I really don't see their new hardware making that much of a jump either. At best it could equal the Evo....maybe pull out 1080p. But for me that makes no difference.


Best advice....go play with both of the phones yourself and hold out at least long enough to try an Incredible.

man their is so much the android os do,you don't need itunes to manage your phone you can mount android to any system with a sd card and you can add music,photos and files.
Another one you can customize the phone to your liking,the market is on the rise have just as good as the iphone except games but thats about to change and you don't need itunes to purchase apps or need a code just get what you need right from the market.look i can go on but it wiil come down to you.OH did i mention Google,Open source.
