WLM, hero, contacts, hand grenade!!

I've used a windows based phone for a long time..so here's a really stupid question!
What is HTC mail? I have a g-mail account now, but really not crazy about it. Plus the contacts thing is about to drive me nuts. Tried another guys fix to export WLM contacts to the hero, but only succeded in wiping out contacts that the sprint store transfered from the mogul to the hero.
Heard "My contacts sync from g-mail to my phone automatically." Well I've got the only sprint hero around that won't do it, or either I'm too stupid to know how.
Please help before it's too late!!

HTC mail is where you can set up email accounts other than gmail (AOL, yahoo, ect)
