I have one of these 64GB microSDXC cards that I would like to use for portable external storage on my Nexus 4, thinking that it would minimize power draw instead of a 64 GB USB 3.0 stick with activity LED. I do have cloud storage, but sometimes need to be prepared with important presentation material when a data connection isn't available in the location where I plan to be.

Does anyone currently use or know of an adapter that will accept the micro SDXC and fit the usb port on the phone?

Will I need a custom ROM to use such external storage?

At this time there is no way to read a storage device via the USB port. The only storage solutions that seem to work are clod or wifi drives.

Are you sure? I was reading somewhere else on these forums (can't remember now, nor can I find the thread), I think in the Nexus 7 forums, that if your device is rooted you can install something called stickmount (think that's what it is called) and it'll allow you to read an external USB stick for external storage. Now, I don't know if that includes mounting a microSD card in a card reader.
