In ONE non-run on sentence, answer the question for a noob: What is root?

root is a term describing attaining root or admin access to an mobile device with the android platform os running it with root the user is able to tweak and customize everything the phone can do many users known as devs or cooks cook roms to be used on rooted devices a rom is a software package that can be flashed to a rooted phone as a means of providing custom guis and features that the stock software doesnt have or is not able to accomplish.

I'm somewhat of a newwwwb myself, but my understanding is that it allows you to "hack" into the internal OS and allows you to have complete control of everything.
