Switching from 3gs to Hero

i have a jailbroken 3gs with installous to access free apps, tomorrow i am getting a contract upgrade and receiving an hero phone.i have heard about root access but is this the same thing as jailbreaking?are apps obtained the old way by downloading them and installing them via a computer or are there softwares like installous to replicate the app store?

I think you'll be impressed by the device and disappointed with the app store (market).

"Jailbreaking" is far easier with android - and is (imho) necessary to see the best of the device. I found jailbreaking my 3g iphone slowed it down a bit (especially after some of the cydia apps were installed - winterboard etc) - whereas jailbreaking the hero improves it in every conceivable way.

No. You need to root the phone first. This gives you access to the areas of the phone you need to update the rom (jailbreak).

Then, the world is your oyster. There are a multitude of ROM available for you to try (unlike JB'ing).
The dev release one every other day it seems! I saw one today that offers a "lite" experience - deleting all non-essentials off the device.

Custom RM or not, you can still use the market to download apps in the normal way - another advantage over JB'ing.

Keep an eye on this forum - you'll quickly see who the devs and pioneers are
Also take a look over at modaco - thats where the roms live.

Paid for apps are pretty rare - but don't expect anything like the quality over on apple.

You will find that many more of the apps for android are free compared to iphone. But, yes; if they are not free, you pay for them. You setup a google account to make the payment if you choose.

I must confess, I just followed the links on the tutorial and downloaded what I was told to!
There is no "beginner" with Android. We're all beginners and we're all learning together. I think you'll find the community here a breath of fresh air - a lot of very friendly and helpful folk. Growing very fast too!

yeah for sure, i found it very hostile for beginners on the mac forums

You'll also enjoy not missing calls because the stupid little ringer on/off switch has moved in your pocket!

Unfortunately - you'll miss ipod functions, mainstream apps, itunes store

All in all - I think you'll like it. Way more possibilities and personalisation.

Ah, now I have run out of expertise.

I use a mac, but I switched the old wondoze lappy on for this process.

There are quite a few mac folk on here though....do a search.

whilst i find a rom etc is it safe to do the first root proceedure and still use the phone?will it still work or do i have to instantly upload a new rom?

Your phone will still work...rooting will just give you some extra abilities including flashing new ROMs.

It's looking like T-Mobile UK is not in any hurry to release an update. Can anybody recommend a good ROM to start with.

The only one that is based around the new ROM is the MoDaCo ROM, all others are old pre rooted ones.. So go for MoDaCo..

what a nightmare, i did step one and installed flashrec but then when i write sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img it doesnt find it

Why do you want to root the phone? If its new; Id suggested running it factory for a while till you find a reason to need root access.
