Help System (sdcard) and Media processed draining battery and consuming a lot of CPU

This happens to me at least once per day. I feel the phone getting very hot near the bottom. Almost too hot to hold and it's in a case! I turn the phone on and it shows that my battery has drained like 13% in 40 minutes when the phone was supposed to be sleeping. When I look in GSam Battery Monitor it shows that the phone was actually held awake the whole time and that the battery was all consumed by the "System (sdcard)" and "Media" processes. Since I first noticed it, I've managed to catch it happening and use Elixir to view more detailed info about the process. Turns out it's the "Security Storage" process and it's definitely using the CPU to do something. The problem is, I have no clue what it's doing and why so I don't know how to prevent it. The included packages are com.android.providers.security, android, com.google.android.backup, com.android.providers.settings.

I've attached some screenshots showing the info from GSam and Elixir for a specific time when it consumed 13% battery in 40 minutes when the screen was only on for 8 minutes but the phone was held awake for the other 32 minutes by this process running.

On a related note, I've noticed a few times that it's happened after I've unplugged the phone from the USB cable attached to my desktop computer (running Windows 7 64 bit). I'm not sure if that has something to do with it? I haven't done anything while it was plugged in, just charged it.

I've uninstalled Google Music but I still have this problem.

The Google backup is a bit of a drain which is why I never use it. Looks like you are though. You know when you first setup and there's a "allow Google to backup this device" tick box? Its that. When you factory reset, theres an option to let it restore. Doing this downloads your apps for you.

Anyway this may not be the sole cause but I can see its a contributing factor unless I'm reading wrong. You can turn this off in the "backup and reset" menu.

It doesn't appear to be the media scanner service but worth trying this too... move all the data off your external card to pc. Format card and move backup

I've been reading that rooting the device and freezing that app will solve the problem. The problem is rooting it....

Airplane mode, left my phone on overnight. Woke up and it was down to 89 while Media Server is took up 50% of the battery. Sigh.

Rescan media is a way around "media scanner service" which is different to this issue.

Actually rescan media doesn't fix the issue. It just hides it by turning off media scanning, which means you have to turn media scanner on when you want to detect new media such as a new photo in the gallery. Not really a solution at all.

I used to use that too but since learning the bug is with an upgrade to jellybean with existing media on the sdcard, the formatting trick I mentioned earlier really works. Copy EVERYTHING from sd to pc. Format sd. Copy EVERYTHING back to sd. No more rescan media app needed

Mine GS3 started draining fast as soon as I disabled a bunch of the bloatware that the AT&T variant came with. I suspect that there is a process in media server app that is looking for a function to happen that can't happen if it's disable. I reenabled all of the bloatware that phone came with and the phone is behaving normally again.

Yes, Media Storage and Downloads 4.1.1 apps are culprit of the issue. The article over here confirms the same
