I like to transfer small files to and from the PC and the Nexus 7. In several threads I have seen these options (and I am sure there are more):

FX File Explorer
swiFTP
Kies air
EStrongs File Explorer

Questions:

a) Do any of these programs run on the Nexus 7.
b) Which one is the easiest to use.

Speed is not an issue because I would be using it only for small files. For large/many file(s) transfer I would use the cable.

I do this all the time using ES File Explorer. Assuming you have set up the file sharing and firewall on your PC just ask ES File Explorer to scan for the PC then you can browse it just as you browse the on tablet storage.
+1 on ES File Explorer. I entered the (fixed) IP address of my "server" which supposedly works better ... I know it comes up automatically. I also play MP3s from the server HD on my N7, and have tried one video satisfactorily.

Now I have ES File Explorer (had that all the time on my N7). But how do I connect with my desktop. There is no user manual. So I am a bit lost.

The problem is almost certainly configuring a shared folder and the firewall on your PC. I can't help with this since I use Server 2008 (I'm a developer) not Windows 7 and the sharing is different.

Assuming you have a shared folder start ES File Explorer and tap on the "LAN" tab, then tap the "Search" icon. After about 30 seconds you'll get a list of all the servers on your network, one of which will be your PC. If you don't see your PC in the list it means that on your PC sharing isn't configured or the firewall is on.

This is why WiFi File Transfer Pro is worth all 99 pennies. Easy. :smokingsomb:
