Root Rooting tonight, what ROM do you suggest

So since a root exploit is most likely going to be a while I decided that once I get home today from work I am going to flash back to 2.0.1 and root.

The question I have for everyone is what do you guys think I should load for the custom rom? When I was previously rooted I was running smoked glass 6.0.1. That was my first and only custom rom before I unrooted and waited for the OTA update. (yes I am dumb and thought it was going to be awesome and yes I am kicking myself for doing it because I want root back)

With that said I didn't really have a lot of time to mess around or try out new roms. What ones do you guys recomend. I would like to stay with a 2.1 rom and be able to update my baseband as well.

The way I rooted last time was with the update.zip file that had superuser and then used droidroothelper to basically do the rest. Any other suggestions on on to "re-root" would be appreciated too but mainly I want suggestions on what rom to use and what kernal to use.

Most of the newer ROM are fast and stable (YMMV). I would recommend going old school in setting up busybox, recovery, and flashing your ROM

Pete's BB.9 and Koush's (he will probably have a couple of revisions by this evening :)) are both excellent, full featured ROMs. Fab's ESE81 is my current favorite with the benefit of having him in this forum to answer any questions.

I would recommend Pete's BB .9 or CyanogenMod from Koush. Both of these ROMs are extremely fast and polished and they both have excellent battery life and stability, IMO you can't go wrong with either one. If you are willing to try a little less polished but still excellent ROM ChevyNo1's Simply Stunning V3.0 is also quite nice.

Well I didn't root yet because I went to the bar and watched the Red Wings game instead. It looking like rooting will happen by this weekend.

I never knew about the ROM Manager app so I think I will have to give it a shot because it seems to be the easiest way to install ROMs or at least everyone is making it out to be!!!!

It's the easiest way to install the BEST ROM. CyanogenMod is really in a league of its own. ;)

Guess it's not the popular choice but I am perfectly content with SG6.01. I tried a few others but since I put it on when it was launched, I have not switched.

I'm with you - I started out with BB (granted it was back at version 0.7 I think) and wasn't super impressed with it (the theme wasn't my favorite, and I had issues with incoming calls). When SG 6.0.1 was released I gave that a try and was so impressed with the speed, stability, and theme that I've been running it ever since.

Shadow - I don't use wifi tethering, the camera video capture hack, VPN, or other "advanced" rooting features. With that said, would CyanogenMod offer anything that Smoked Glass does not? I really love the SG theme and the overall stability of SG, but I've heard SOOO much about CyanogenMod I'm definitely considering trying it out. TIA!

I'm going to interject here with support for the NexTheme ESE81 R2 ROM posted by Fabulous (here as well as All Droid). But I am going to give you a few reasons to back up my recommendation.

http://androidforums.com/all-things...heme-ese81-r2-release-4-8-10-new-goodies.html

1) The latest version of CM is a bit wonky IMO. I have had a lot of force closes with it (version 5.0.5.7).

2) Even though I am a BIG Koush/Cyanogen fan...I still don't know that it is the best ROM for your first ROM. Get something designed for your phone first...then venture out.

3) The ROM that Fabulous put together is really STABLE and FAST! The updated version has more options (like scripts you CAN run...but don't have to) but you are not inundated with options for various things you have never used. If you run his ROM...the way it is...you will be good to go! Download SetCPU so you can set the overclock (I believe the kernel that comes with it goes up to 1.0GHz) so that will get your feet wet (you can try to increase to 1.2 or 1.3 later if you want to).

Just my thoughts on the matter...do what you like but I don't generally recommend CM for a first ROM.

Don't buy it, UBR recomended CM to me for my first ROM... :p

j/k

He's right...I did. :) But I think Mr. ska.t73 was pretty knowledgeable and had done a little homework before we discussed it. It was a judgment call at the time. But I have said in posts here before that I don't know that it is the best starter rom. You sent me a PM though...I'll lie like CRAZY in a PM! :D
