Help Text Input...Auto Correct WITHOUT Predictive

Hello!

I tried a search and nothing seemed to answer my question...

Basically, I'm looking for a way to use auto-correct without having the line with predicted words.

More info...
I'm coming from a BlackBerry Curve. When I was typing with that, it would automatically change a lot of words...most importantly, add apostrophes to contractions and appropriately capitalize I. For example, I would type im and it would turn it to I'm. It would change cant to can't. Typing out I'm on the Droid is pretty annoying...shift, I, switch the symbol screen, ', switch back to letters, m. Waaaaaay too much work, imo.

So, how do I make that happen with my Droid Bionic? I DON'T want to have to chose from the predictive text list because I hate having that line on the text input screen...just really annoys me.

Additionally, with the BB would could add things that you wanted auto-corrected. For example, ill. Ill is a word, but I used it more as I'll. So I added a rule saying change ill to I'll. Is there a way to do this??

I don't like Swype, so I don't want to use that input method.

Is there an app I can use? Are there settings I'm missing???

You can use Swype as a regular KB. Just throwing that out there.

As for the stock KB you simply go to Settings --> Language & keyboard settings --> Multi-touch keyboard settings --> disable Show suggestions and enable Auto-correct errors .

That should get the functionality that you want.

Thank you!! I swear I tried that combination of settings previously and it wasn't working. But, I just tried again and it's working...well, almost.

It's still not correcting im to I'm (or ill to I'll, but I don't think it would automatically do that anyway since ill is a real word). Any other suggestions?

So, there's no way to add words to the auto-correct "dictionary?"

User dictionary - there's an app for that - see if it helps - User Dictionary Manager - Market link

Try adding I'll and I'm to it and see if it helps.

Also, you don't have to change the KB layouts to get the special characters - for things like apostrophe, etc. long press the period key an it brings up a menu with several of them including apostrophe, comma, etc.

That might be the best solution overall....

Thanks for all the help. I ended up getting a new keyboard app...Smart Keyboard Pro. It does everything I want it to.

But thanks for the info about the long press. Didn't know that.

I just tried the long press on many of the keys ... there is a whole litlte universe buried there that i never knew about.

One thing that irritates me is that it won't change "id" to "I'd". Who uses the word "id"? "Cant" and "wont" are words as well, but it changes them to "Can't" and "won't" respectively. There may be others that it'll change, but these are all I've used.

My Droid 3 autocorrects most of the words in deedubya3800's list, except it won't change "il" to "I'll" which is very annoying. "il" shows up as the default in green.

How can I fix this?

I use Smart Keyboard Pro (w/ the English add-on) cause I'm such a T-9 portrait whore. lol. It will auto correct im to I'm, etc.

My gf took psyche classes in college. I'm pretty sure that's how "id" found it's way in the default dictionary.

This works well for me also. And it's my keyboard of choice.

Argh. I am also using Smart Keyboard Pro, and its not making the change for things like "cant" to "can't".... and "ok" stays as lowercase even though it underlines it in red to say it needs to be "OK".

If I use a new word, I have to type it out without using the T9 feature, then long press to save it. But.... some words, especially cuss words, don't stay in the memory no matter how many times I make them "save". Lol.

Interesting. Thanks. I ended up clearing out the entire dictionary, and that seems to have fixed a lot of my issues. lol. Curse words stick for me!!!
