Help Phone turns on when charging

Hi all,

Just received my X10 and as much as I can't wait to use it I'm going to give it a good charge overnight but everytime I connect it to the mains to charge the phone turns itself on...

If I turn the phone off, it then turns itself back on...is this the same with you guys. Is it possible to charge the phone from the mains while it's off???

Dunno if its possible to charge it while off.. I know mine keeps turning itself on maybe its a weird feature of the phone :-/

Glad it's not just me then, I can live with that...just never had a phone on charge that wouldn't turn off.

Can't speak for any other phones but I do know the iPhone also exhibits this behaviour so guess it's not that unusual

My iPAQ 910c also does this, so I think it's pretty standard.

I am so tempted to mess with my new phone! Mine is charging now in the other room so I am being good!

And also my phone comes on when charging, so must be the norm!

Also I like to add mine didn't come with a screen protector, were we meant to get one???

IMO it's clearly a bug, it shouldn't act like this and it is indeed annoying. I fired off an email to people I know @SE, hopefully will get some answers by the weekend.

There are much more important actual bugs to fix, like the keyboard one or the battery life before SE fix something that isn't even a bug but how the phone is designed to work

This is intended and is a behaviour common to many similar devices. There are no plans to address this in a future patch

I have never had a phone which can't turn off when charging. iPhone sits on a 'charging screen' while charging, still technically on. But the X10 sits on the home screen. Just crazy.

Not a big problem though, since this phone is simply outstanding.

Had my phone in work with me for the last two days...still trying to tweak it to suit my tastes and trying numerous apps from Marketplace

It's a bug in a SE phone. If you don't understand the word, look up the definition.

Yes I have, the K800i for one but there have been others. I also own an Xperia X10 oddly enough

It's not exactly breaking the phone like the battery life or the keyboard bugs are now is it. So it switches on. If you don't want your phone to be switched on don't plug it in, actually don't take it out the box. Most people however like their phones to be on because then they can use them

In the 21st century I went through Jornadas/iPaqs, Nokias, HTCs and planety of Sony Ericsson, of course.

My iPhone 3GS always turned on while charging and also my HTC Hero and HTC Touch Diamond 2 before that. Also I can confirm that the Morotola DEXT (Cliq) does exactly the same and turns itself on when put on charge after a few seconds.

Personally, and Im not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone here, I think its a feature and not a bug... most people charge their phone regularly so phone is on when charging anyway but for those who dont and battery has died then its a perfect feature to turn a communication device on when it has the power to run for reasons of it being a device for others to communicate with you on.

Ok found this thread. I thought the phone was defective but it seems to be normal function.

Btw, I also have a HTC Magic and it does not turn itself on while charging. It is using the same Android version, that is, Donuts 1.6. So, it isn't an Android feature, but certainly something that SE introduced.

Oh, btw, this is my second SE. I originally had the first, first smartphone ever made by SE, the S710. It certainly turned itself off while charging. lol

Guys, noticed something about charging the phone, wondered if you have seen the same.

The only charger in my box was a USB cable that plugs into a "plug head" that plugs into the wall.

I plugged the X10 in last night to charge, around 12:00 am, when it still had about 15% charge. By 8:30 this morning it was only at 88% charge!!! Have you noticed the same? By the way, I had/have WiFi & Data turned off while charging, and used TaskPanel to kill all background tasks while it was charging.

I also think it's weird that a phone turns itself back on after you turn it off, when it plugs in to charge. I can see why you might want it in while charging (to receive calls) but it should be up to the user to decide that. Maybe I want it off while charging? Also, I have an HTC Magic, and if I shut it off to charge it does not turn itself back on.


So I'm wondering if this is because of the type of charger, something wrong with the battery, or that's just the way the X10 charges?

If it's just how the X10 charges, imagine that someone whose phone is almost dead or dead plugs it in to charge before they go to bed, and when they are ready to leave for work in the morning it's still not fully charged!

Kamm: first of all calm down.

Secondly, don't tell us what we have and haven't experienced on other phones. You may have never experienced such things, but I certainly have. My iPAQ 910c most certainly did turn itself on when I plugged it in. I know this for a fact as I had to recharge it from dead nearly every day of the last 2 months I was using it, and every time it would turn itself on as soon as it was plugged in (and yes, it did this before the battery started to go wonky as well).

mjschmidt: It's part of the way the X10 charges. It doesn't continue to draw a charge when it reaches 100%, but instead stops recharging until it drops down to 90% and then re-starts charging. I've plotted this same cycle happening every time the phone is plugged in using JuicePlotter since I got the X10 on the 14th, and have read others reporting the same.

Though I've never pulled it off the charger in the morning below 90%, it can range anywhere from 90% - 100% depending when in the cycle I happen to pull it off.

Having talked to an engineer, I discovered how little I know about how these phones work. The phones do need to be turned on in one way or other so that they regulate how much electricity is being charged. It is just a matter of how it is implemented.

I believe Saltorio is right with his explanation. Just have to live with this. I have decided to leave the phone on airplane mode at night before I go to sleep. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
