Root choppy scrolling

I was wondering if anyone knew of a tweak to smooth out the scrolling on our phone. Thats probably been my biggest beef with this phone since owning it. For me the scrolling in apps like the play store, and tapatalk is choppy. The sad part is my droid charge actually scrolls smoother than my spectrum and the charge is crap compared to the spectrum in terms on hardware specs. I'm not sure it's even possible to fix this but I was hoping someone knew of a mod or tweak that might help.

Which governor are you using?

no offense, but I'm not an idiot and this has nothing to do with my issue. But it's doesnt matter which governor I use. I normally use interactive, or ondemand.

Are you telling me that your spectrum has perfectly smooth scrolling in the play store?
Mine does with a good internet connection (3g or LTE), I have under Developer options>Window animation scale .5x and same for Transition animation scale (.5x).
Phone seems slow if I don't have it set to this, stock is 1x, Animation off doesn't work either, mine likes .5x.
Oh and make sure "USB debugging" is off it slows down the phone too when left on.

Mine was pretty bad on AOKP but has been much better on CM10, but you're on CM10 aren't you?

I noticed these in the build.prop, but no idea if they could be adjusted or if that would even help:

#Improve Scrolling Build.prop Tweak
ro.max.fling_velocity=12000
ro.min.fling_velocity=8000

Think there's also a scrolling tweak in Pimp My ROM, have you tried that? I haven't been using it since CM10 and don't remember exactly what it was called but remember it helping on Eclipse.

Yes, I'm on CM10

I'm using all the tweaks in pimp my rom but it doesnt seem to help.

Thanks for your input, I'll look into those build prop tweaks

Yes and no.

I find that if I use the 'cfq' scheduler with the Interactive governor, I get a laggier scroll and response, than I do with 'deadline' scheduler. I would try underclocking to maybe 1.296 and using 'Performance'... see if that gives a smoother experience. I recommend that, because I found my phone performed better and was more fluid when underclocked with a performance governor on the GB kernel. Just a thought... you know how crazy this phone is. lol

Wow, that does seem to make 'flinging' faster. And I totally forgot about debugging... I'm gonna try another antutu with it off and see if I score better.

I don't know if this would help with scrolling, but I'm also curious to hear others opinions on this. Have any of you tried Seeder?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032

I just installed it and certain things are definitely faster, like the recent apps list when long pressing home and the app manager, but my phone was running pretty smooth on CM10. The discussion on XDA is pretty heated so would like some of the devs and other users opinions on it. Haven't had it long enough to determine if it's affecting battery.

Very cool, awesome find! I'll look into ways to increase the entropy pool. There must be many sources of entropy in a phone. One of the typical ways is to use irq timings.

I came across that on reddit last night, I'm still waiting to see if it actually has any effect. I do notice that facebook and recent apps scroll much faster, as well as the app manager in ROM Toolbox Pro. other than that though, I haven't really noticed much improvement. That being said, Running CM10, pimped out with pimpmyrom, I didn't really have any lag to begin with. THe official google verdict as far as I can tell is that this problem was fixed in anything post GB, but there are a LOT of people reporting major improvements. I'm very interested in seeing how this pans out in the next couple of months.

Thank you so much. This is amazing. It has made my phone fly. Even scrolling is smooth. Everything is faster. I mean this is stunning. Wow. Awesome. Absolutely amazing. Thank you thank you thank you. This has to be the greatest tweak of all time.

Somebody in the Optimus Elite forum posted this today:

Dear god no. Somewhere in that thread is a post from me (post #234), where I added in extra logging into the kernel for this very phone and proved that this entropy-seeding is BS. All it does is keep the cpu busy so it doesnt idle down to its lower settings as much, and is then less time for the thing to respond when you need it to. If you want the same effect, set your governor to "performance".

Thanks for posting that dark one. I was going to post that XDA corrected that and said it was mostly placebo effect and didn't really do anything but you beat me to it. Another (legitimate) way to increase scrolling performance is to tweak your governor.

you can call it placebo if you like but I had massive choppy scrolling before and this almost completely eliminated it. Thats not a placebo effect...thats results.

Also setting your cpu to performance keeps it at max mhz and my cpu still scales down to 192. So yours and darks post are not accurate and actually flat out worng from what I can see. Do I know whats it's doing technically? No. Can I see a noticeable difference since installing it? Absolutely. Everything in my phone is faster. This has to be doing a bit more than cpu frequency adjustment.

Best way to describe is this: performance maxes the cpu when the screen is on, so it's like a light switch... Either all on or all off (to the min), but no gradient. Conservative is slower to ramp up to max (so there can be a lag) and interactive is a faster version of conservative.

I run 1.4/192 with interactive and have better performance than when I'm at 1.5 or higher. You just have to find the combo that works best with your hardware.

XDA can't decide what they think about it, and I can tell you for a fact that it does more than just tweaking the governor does. My CPU freqs are basically identical whether running Seeder or not, so it doesn't affect that. Still deep sleeps too. The general consensus seems to be that there is definitely something happening that does improve performance on a large number of devices, but nobody can explain exactly what. My phone performs best at 1512/192, Interactive, Deadline, and is pretty smooth on CM10 but I'm a serious multi-tasker and I notice the difference, although it's minimal.
Also have it on my tablet, there's an even more noticeable difference on that, and it hasn't randomly rebooted since I installed it, which usually happened about twice a day.

it definitely works. go to the play store and read the reviews for it. Almost everyone rates it 5 stars and reports a noticeable difference. Thanks again for sharing this!

I tested entropy, the phone does not run out. So that's not what makes it go faster.

The fact that your reboots stopped makes me suspect that it's keeping the second cpu online. Can you check? Look at /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/online

i'll repeat one of the reviews I read yesterday from the play store. Do I know why and how it works? NO! But I know it does because I can see it's effect. :]
