Phone seems so laggy...

Manual 2.1, helix, 5 screens, no live WP, and only a few widgets.

Seems like the phone needs 3 or 4 seconds to process everything.. whether its a text message reply, or a new calendar event or loading an app. VERY annoying. Wasn't this way when I first got it. Switching from portrait to landscape or back again takes a good 5 seconds.. scrolling through the apps is jumpy.. etc.

Yes, I run Advanced Task Killer (use the widget) and i run it like its going out of style to keep everything clean. I'm very OCD in this sense..

Any thoughts of what I should look in to?

Running services are:

  • Google Talk (7.6mb)
  • ATK Free (2.6mb)
  • Weather Widgets (3.4mb)
  • Android Core Apps (9.4mb)
  • Lookout Security (2.8mb)
  • myLock Basic (2.4mb)
  • Locale Wifi (2.2mb)
  • Locale (4.7mb)
  • Swype (12mb) <-- holy crap, 12mb?!
  • Available: 7.9mb + 54mb in 14, Other: 600mb in 3
Any thoughts or suggestions? Seriously considering rooting just so i can OC. not sure if that would help or if its a memory thing..

aren't task killers known to cause lagging?

Really? i've not heard this yet? I'll have to do some searching. I don't understand why it would?

go back to 2.01, root, install 2.1 custom rom, overclock to 1200mhz

This is my plan for now. Will probably do this weekend.

Obvious suggestion, but have you tried restarting the phone? Works for me.. although mine never runs slow. Only thing that runs slow is typing this on my phone, but that must be the browser.

Yes, although it's been a few days. I'll try again now.

It's actually a hotly debated topic around here. Try a search and you'll find LOTS of info.

Going back to 2.0.1, rooting, installing a rom, and oc'ing is also a viable course to take, but it's pretty drastic when a simpler thing to try is just getting rid of your task killer for a couple of days and seeing what happens... Up to you.

Also, there are a few people complaining of some lagging with helix, too.

1) Stop using advanced task killer.

Imagine, if you will, that you are using a public computer in a library, with 5 others. Now, someone else comes in wanting to use a computer, but there are none left. This person asks the one who has been there the longest to leave. They then collect their things and leave. This happens every time a new person comes in, unless someone leaves of their own volition.

This is android. There are 6 spots for programs, more for resident daemons. When a new program launches, android tells the program that was last used to "collect its things and leave," so to speak.

Now imagine that the new person takes their seat, and then muscles some of the other users out without letting them collect their things.

That person/program is a task killer. Instead of giving a process time to finish, the task killer rips the floor out from underneath it. Normally, this is okay, but there is a high chance for data loss or corruption. Also, it simply isn't needed. Unless you have a G1 or other phone with little RAM, android can handle things on its own.

Hope that helps!

2) Root. This will allow you to do two major things. The first, as mentioned, is to overclock. The second is to download an app called "Cachecleaner" from market and make sure your phone isn't just loaded too heavily.

3) Stop using advanced task killer.

4) Stop using advanced task killer.

5) (Again, this requires root) Rename your other two launcher apps. If you use Helix, then you are, at the moment, making your phone run twi separate launchers at the same time. This is known to cause a great deal of lag. I won't bother with the how-to, since people far greater than myself have already written how-to's on this.

and of course...

6) Stop using advanced task killer.

I second that. Just by turning it on after a certain point you are slowing it down with all the services and apps. Overclocking is the solution. BTW, being obsessive about task killing apps is not wise, it can deteriorate the battery life and cause its own set of stabilities. It's best to let Android allocate resources and suspend programs as needed

Well there is no pre-installed task manager, so how else do you propose one manage there open applications?
Learn about Android OS, it does all the management of the running apps. Earlier in this thread one of the Guides posted the information. There is no reason to purposely force close applications, and THAT is exactly what task managers do.. they force close apps, apps that may or may not have been able to save the data they were using at the time you closed their access. :)

Well aren't you snarky! I wasn't aware that Android automatically closed apps, but having 6 apps running at once is too many for me. Also I don't belive this is true because TasKiller will show which apps are running and I regularly see more than 6 processer running at once. I'm going to go ahead and test that now, but I remain unconvinced.

I don't run any apps that I would be worried about losing data from anyway.

Your attitude = fail on all levels

I just opened WAY more than 6 apps, I have 20+ apps running and only one of them closed itself. So it appears the Guide was either lying or misinformed when he said Android automatically closes apps after you run more than 6. I'd rather use TasKiller to free up RAM than have 20+ apps running at once. Is that ok with you, or is that a fail on all levels?

I would instead argue NOT using a Task Killer = fail, but to each his own. I think the argument that using a TasKiller (which frees up RAM) causes the phone to lag is BS.
