Root Wanting to get current

First off let me say I have been absent from the forums for a bit since I was so frustrated with the EVO LTE rooting process. I am now trying to get back in the game and try to get my phone working like my old EVO 4G.

I am wanting to get the most current I can and use a ROM like MeanBean or something of that sort and try to get "S-OFF" without having to use Ubuntu since I use Windows 64bit and have not had very good luck in the past trying to use it. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me!

so i would go here and get the latest firmware so that you can flash meanbean:

there is a s-on version that you fastboot command flash the boot.img

sorry that will not work....lol that is only the boot.img

with s-on you can't really flash radios unless you get s-off.

edit: the only options for you is to root the phone with dirty racun or re-lock the phone and take the ota which you do not want to do as this will give you the new hboot which is also not rootable (s-off) yet.

So if I re=lock could I flash the new radio so that I can enjoy some of the new rooted JB ROMs?

so you can do dirty racun with hboot 2.09. so taking the ota will be up to you, but since you are 1.19 i would just get s-off with dirty racun and flash the firmware then take the ota.

LOL yeah they just made dirty racun to work with the latest hboot.

not even a live cd? maybe a different computer? can't remember what you tried

So in your opinion do you think my current set-up using the stock JB ROM with the old firmware is a bad idea...I haven't seem to notice any issues since I did flash it many weeks ago.

read the op for the rom. i think the meanbean rom was the only one i saw that recommended to be on the latest firmware. the other jb roms i have seen does not say this so it will depend.

Okay cool, I was just looking at this JB Tranquility and rEVOLTEd but didn't see anything about needing the most current firmware.

The going knowledge is not to take the OTA update - mostly because it could change your hboot, so you wouldn't be able to S-OFF. I think you could still use HTC DEV to unlock the phone and flash a custom ROM, but [I believe] you'd need to wait for a new exploit for S-OFF on whatever the new hboot is. Assuming you rooted your OG EVO, you know the deal. ...or one of the other members here can confirm/add more thoughts.

My intention with commenting is that I saw your reservations with using Ubuntu. I'm also on a Win7 64-bit machine. I can assure you, if you are comfortable rooting your device, you will have zero problems following the instructions for using an Ubuntu Live CD to gain S-OFF. It's truly worth the effort - I think the greatest benefit is flashing "on the fly" - I no longer need to flash the boot.img via fastboot [which requires a PC]. This REALLY helps with troubleshooting issues that pop up randomly while I'm away from my PC - I can always flash an older build or go stock, whatever...right from the phone. I had to do this to address a bluetooth problem just the other day.

I had not touched Ubuntu prior to DirtyRacun...and now, I kinda dig it. Ubuntu 12.10 wasjust too big to fit on a CD. TU's instructions say you can use an older release, so I did it with version 12.04 32bit. I think the whole process took about two hours; including some downloads, set up, and a quick jump into their support IRC to ask a question.

Anyway - strong recommendation to go S-OFF.

being that the ota just happened right after the release of the new viper update, i would think that it should be fine as long as you were on the previous firmware update.

i would not recommend that you accept the ota. i would wait unitl there is a flashable version or a ruu for it to come out before doing so.

I don't think I am even using the previous firmware since I never accepted any updates, is 3.15.651.16 71ORD the a current firmware or is there a newer one?

yes that is the current one. however, we just had a new ota that just dropped:System Update 3.16.651.3 1-31-13. no ruu's from it just yet. but i'm pretty sure they will be out any day now. it seems that this is only a maintenance update nothing fancy.

Ahh, okay. I am using baseband version 1.12.11.0809, I think that is the old one and one of the reasons I may not be able to flash some of the newer ROMs.

you can always run the RUU_JEWEL_CL_JB_45_S_Sprint_WWE_3.15.651.16_Radio_1.12.11.1119_NV_2.87_003_25007_release_299302_signed.exe to get up to date.

you will need to unlock and get recovery again, however.

Ahh...sounds good! So I would need to run the "re-lock" command first, then run that RUU and then use the HTC DEV unlock method...and then I could try out that new Viper ROM?

For some reason when I ran that RUU my radio did not upgrade, only hboot upgraded to 2.09.0000...at least that's what it says in the hboot menu.

Every time I click reboot the phone just reboots right into hboot...it will not boot to the ROM.

Okay, so I re-ran the RUU and I believe it worked right this time...but for some reason at 96% it said there was some sort of USB connection error. The phone did restart properly this time and everything seems to be updated. I have baseband version: 1.12.11.1119 and build number: 3.15.651.16 CL124461.

try running the ruu again. can you get to the bootloader? if so go into fastboot and you can still use htcdev to get unlocked and then you can even still get recovery as well.

Okay, yup...that's what I did and it worked.
