with all the weather apps out there, I can't seem to find one I like. I want it to be unobtrusive yet tells me today's weather. I don't want it to take up half the homescreen. Does an app exist with a small widget that tells today's weather and you can click it for a forecast? Thanks;)

Your best bet would be to get a good widget app and then you can configure a very small 1x1 widget just for launching the weather. I have tried many weather apps and all have their plusses and minuses, but I never really looked at which each had for their own widgets. I'm currently using Accuweather which has a 4x1 and 4x2 widget which is bigger than what you want.

I use HD Widgets and have a large 5x4 widget that gives me time, current weather, date, 5 day weather and when I press each of these areas it launches a different program. But again, that's not what you are looking for. Any widget app will able to program you a small widget and launch the weather program of your choice. Tons of posts on weather programs and widgets. Do a search, grab a beverage and settle down for a couple hours of reading!

okay, i am fairly new to this... what is HD widgets? or a widget app? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question. I could deal with a 4x1 widget, that's the size of the google search bar. but the one i have now literally takes up half the screen. LOL maybe i'm just being too picky for someone who is afraid to root.

HD Widgets is the name of the Widget you download off Play Store. Beautiful Widgets also has a 1x1 widget which tells you todays weather and clicking it opens up an animated preview with more details and a four day prediction. It also has a 4x1 widget.

Being afraid to root has nothing to do with this. You are capable of so many things on an Android without Root.

Not a stupid question at all! That's why we are all here - to help each other (especially the newbies!) out. HD Widgets is an app. Another favorite is Beautiful Widgets. There are tons of others although these two are two of the best. I checked out both and liked the look of HD better as it was more 'plain'. Beautiful Widgets is more fancy. Speaking of fancy, there is also Fancy Widgets which is also a popular app.

But I would first find a weather program you like. Almost all of them have a couple built in widgets of various sizes to choose from. I have tried most of the major ones and like most apps, they are all pretty good with each one doing basically the exact same thing with the exact same features, just displayed in a different way! The key is to try them all (or as many as you can) until you find the one that tickles your fancy the best. Also try out each of their widgets.

Here's a run down of the most common ones. I have 'test drove' all of these on my phone and I ended up going with Accuweather just because it's interface worked best for me:

Accuweather - 4x1 (2), 4x2
Go Weather EX - 2x1, 4x1, 4x2
Weather Bug - 1x1, 2x1
Weather Underground - 1x1, 2x2 (2)
The Weather Channel - 1x1, 2x2, 4x2

I still have all of these programs on my phone and go back and try them from time to time because they make changes (hopefully improvements) and you never know when one will suddenly get better - that's how close they all are to each other. They all have free versions that are ad supported but if you find one you really like you can usually buy a premium version for a couple bucks which will have no ads and usually some premium features. I have paid for Accuweather because it was my favorite.

Don't be afraid to try them all out. You can always uninstall the ones you don't like or just leave them in your app drawer to play with later.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

Thank you. I am still learning, and it seems like so many people root for everything that sometimes I feel like I should or have to to get customization or whatever. It's good to know I don't have to! I will check out the HD Widgets and see what I can do :)

You definitely do not have to root to get a LOT of customization. I have not rooted (yet) and I don't know if I ever will. So far I have found no compelling reason to do so. Like you, I am relatively new to Android and so far I have been able to tweak and customize almost non-stop for going on three months. I find new programs and apps every day, install them and continue. I will say that after three months I have my phone dialed in pretty sweet but I still constantly find new things to do. I am loving the Android platform and can never go back to iPhone now!

I use Elecont Weather because I got Pro free at Amazon, has nice very configurable widgets.

I installed this on my grand daughters Galaxy Player because it was lower memory than most and simpler.

Sooooo many choices, but most have widgets you can pretty much make do what you want. Elecont 3x3 here:
