Steve Jobs did a really good job at displaying how functional the wallpapers would be for the phone. I'm so impressed, I think i'm going to fore-go anything negative i've ever said about the iPhone, give up my favorite carrier which is Sprint, decide that the EVO isn't worth it and take up at&t and get an iPhone because man, changing wallpapers is breath taking.

I have to go to work now. I know not a lot of people who I work with are cell phone fanatics like myself, however I'm going to take a long some snippets of information with me and share it with them tonight. I don't think there will be an un-happy soul in the room tonight, i'm sure of it. The thought of being able to finally change a background on a cellular device is something that will help them express themselves, and that's all they've been begging to do their entire lives.

Steve Jobs is going up on my wall as my mentor. If it weren't for him, I would have immediately dropped out of the cell phone area as my hobby and found something new like collecting stamps, but Steve Jobs was able to save my tongue before I took one stamp from each collection and licked it to post it on one giant mural. Actually, I may still do it, but use the stamps to make a portrait of Steve Jobs, the size of at least the one side of my house so I can share my joy of being able to change my backgrounds on my soon to be purchased iphone with the world.

What I love is how until today, Apple users would often say that the lack of multitasking is itself a feature because it saves resources and keeps the phone running fast. Now that it's been announced, they're saying how great it will be and how Apple may not always be the first to do something, but once they do, they're the best.

Yesterday, multitasking was a needless waste of resources. Today, Apple is the first company to "get it right," implementing it in a way that will magically never cause any lag or extra drain on the battery. Obviously, this is something no other mobile OS has been able to do before, as evidenced by Apple's own promotional materials. And the whole reason it took so long for them to add multitasking is because they wanted to make sure the feature was perfect before releasing it. It had nothing to do with purposely holding back features in order to release them later and make them seem more competitive.

Of course, the more realistic Apple fans are a little more in tune with reality and recognize this OS release as a bunch of things that were a long time coming. They're happy that those features will finally be making it to the iPhone, but they're not acting as though Apple is revolutionizing the mobile phone OS by adding features that have been in other mobile OSes for years.

well some of the comments you guys have been making... in my opinion, to be honest i think they have made some amazing changes, i'd love to be able to change my wallpaper, you know i couldnt do that on my old nokia 5110 that i had almost 9/10 years ago ..... but i think i have been changing wallpapers on every phone ive had since...

...and that multi tasking double tap home little dock that comes up that would be amazing, i wish my android device did something like that, you know what i mean, just think how handy that could be? for example on my htc hero if i did something like press and hold home for example i really wish that i could get some sort of screen whihc would allow me to switch to an app that ive just had open or show me the last few apps that i had open.... hang on hasnt android let me do that since i had it, look i get a little pop up when i press andhold home button on my hero, you should try this its so good.

...oh thats right they arent the first to do it they just do it the best....

the folder thing is cool i cant do that on my hero... oh wait yes i can creat a folder and drag things in to it. ive been doing that since windows 3.11 in college.


the email thing sounds good, but i;d have to see it in action as it sounds like what android already have or will have in v2

It seems to me like Apple are trying their best to sign their own death warrants in mobile technology.

As someone who's old enough to have witnessed the birth of the home PC it looks to me to be very similar to the old situation with IBM

IBM were the big boys of computing at the time, and when home PCs started becoming popular they insisted in doing everything 'Their way' other companies and PC manufacturers were charged for using IBMs technology and IBM very much took an 'our way or nothing' approach.

What happened? All the other companies got together and decided to make their own PC architecture, which would be universally compatible and free from licence. They effectively made IBM irrelevant.

There are an awful lot of similarities with what Apple are doing now.

While I'd be happy to see Apple put in their place, they simply have too much advertising to suffer the same fate as IBM. Apple has tapped into the ignorance of the common person, they can throw out garbage at will with no consequences because the general public isn't going to question them.

True. But if you piss off enough developers and they go elsewhere, the whole thing starts to collapse. If the iPhone market collapses, this will be the reason, not customer rebellion.

You can piss off developers as much as you want, as long as you make them money. As long people are spending in Apple's market, the devs will do anything Apple wants. No one wants to bite the hand that feeds. Adobe is the one in trouble here, not Apple. Hard for those of us who despise Apple, but true.

Actually, if Adobe struck back, they could hurt apple even worse. The most common myth in today's PC vs Mac war is Mac is better for design. While completely untrue, the myth carries alot of wieght. Well, what happens of Adobe holds back their best of the best design products from the mac platform? Designers will have to go elseware, and no-one will have any reasons to buy a mac.

Where I can understand your disdain towards Apple, just remember if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are now with the user friendliness and design of smart-phones as they are.

Where somethings they have been slow with, others have revolutionised the market, with millions of phones being sold. I have os4 and will be trying it out, however apple have let things slip, it will be interesting how they respond with the Iphone 4.0. At the moment I am happy to try out the X10, it seems a very powerful bit of hardware with a lovely UI, I will have a proper play and comment later on.

I'm not trying to pick arguments or anything, but read your text in bold here. I'm sorry, but just because Apple did something as far as user friendliness, and certain design aspects, that does not say that nobody else would have done it. This goes for either at around the same time, or even a little bit after Apple did some things.

They have a huge marketing rep, and a great ability to push their product. However, their "smart phones" are far from smart compared to most of the other smart phones out there.

Granted, some of the certain aspects of the iPhone are awesome, like the capacitive touch screen coupled with the kinetic scrolling (some of the best i've ever seen in the device), you'll be hard pressed that a business user will give up the ability to do some of the stuff on his Android, WinMo, BB, or WebOS device just to have some of the "easier to use" features of an iPhone.

Just because iPhone appealed to the masses quicker, doesn't mean nobody else would have ever done it. And for the simple fact that they DID appeal to the masses quicker, doesn't mean their device is top notch in the smart phone category, and I hardly believe for a second that they "revolutionized" the market in a sense that if it weren't for them, all smart phones would suck or not have anything that we see in them today, feature or design wise.

Personally I wish they would do this. Apple had good design computers when they had focus on them....but their focus is mobile now and frankly imacs or any comp they make is a waste of money. I can get better hardware for less and get the exact same programs (the Adobe suite) for the same price.

I really really wish Adobe would stop making products that will run on a mac...

So I do think apple changed the way companies such as Nokia, HTC, Microsoft, Google etc etc viewed the smart phone arena and made them sit up and take note, just look at the impact of the app market as a prime example and Itunes being another one. Everyone is trying to copy these, where were these features before Apple?

All they did was copy the UI(mostly) from existing platforms....

HTC has always had excellent hardware.
