Download while you can!!
Custom ROM cookers have been putting out work based on this as well as similiar leaks for a while now, but it's nice to have access to something that's semi official. Having said that, there are a few things you need to know before you go flash happy with this.

  • This will replace everything on your phone.
  • This will overwrite any custom recovery image you may be using.
  • While this is rooted, it's not functional the same way custom ROMs are.
  • Like any unofficial update, expect problems in the Market.
That enough bold type for ya? Now that you're warned -

yes these is the leak that fresh and damageless used, so i guess damageless said we good to go so here we go people.
You cannot simply extract it. This still has root since it is a test release. I recommend just doing an adb pull of your system directory after you flash it. Don't do this when the final one comes out or else you might be stuck without root.

Fresh 2.0d and Damage's ROMs are already based on this...

I sort of thought so based on the timestamp and the release of those two roms (plus Fresh thanked Damageless for the leaked RUU on the last release). I thought maybe this was an even fresher version of that release, since it's still pretty buggy, but I'm still happy with what we got.

Well I went through and read what was left up in the xda forums, mods went through and cleaned up the discussions since they got out of hand. So here is what I got about the RUU leak:

This is indeed the same leak that the latest 2.1 ROMs are based off of.
Damageless is the one with the source who leaked the RUU, he then chose certain other devs to share it with so as to protect the identity of his source.
Someone got upset or jealous of Damageless source and decided to accuse Damageless of keeping parts of or the whole RUU to himself and then got ahold of it and released it.
Due to this Damageless is considering leaving the Hero dev community and needless to say, we won't be getting any new 2.1 until the official update is released since Damageless' source is now compromised or possibly concerned he/she may be compromised and will not be "leaking" anymore.

Sucks. I know....

Bummer. I hope it all blows over. It would suck to loose Damegless as a dev. He's huge for our community.

I am a little confused as this seems to be fully functional!
Got a new radio image, new PRI and PRL, protected apps showing, wifi, synced in about 3 minutes!

Seems good to me! Flash away!
forgot to mention time without a signal is 0%

Seriously? Over on xda they were saying unless you are a dev this would do nothing for you. They were even saying you could brick the phone using this.

Yes seriously it's working fine on my phone! The only thing I can see is for some reason it's not changing from landscape to portrait! Not sure what the deal with that is yet!

I just rebooted and it seems to be working fine now!

Installed it. Phone works fine. Google goggles and google nav both work. Although I have to check tomorrow if the streetview nav works. Sense has some new features but does not look like the one that I've been seeing screenshots of. I don't see an option or capability of live wallpapers even though you can download it from the market. A lot more apps showing in the market that were never there before... Didn't have to do anything special. Connected phone with usb, ran htc sync, ran exe, 10 minutes later it was done.

Actually now that I think about it, the RUU should probably work, just like the RUU for 1.5 is just the stock image for the phone. This is a tester version of what Sprint/HTC has so far for the Hero. It is going to have some bugs, and any features that they haven't put in yet, like the new sense???, won't be present.

I think the reason the devs were saying this isn't something useful is because even though it has root, it doesn't have root like the custom ROMS, which means that it won't have the ability to do the things we usually do with root. No su, sh and busybox I guess is the biggest issue as far as the devs were concerned. Also, this will flash the new radio. Since that is always more dangerous than just flashing a new ROM and because this is not the final RUU for 2.1 and is just for testing, the added cautionary warnings are warranted IMO.

Honestly, I can't imagine this RUU has any added benefit over the current 2.1 ROMs we have available. If you are running one of the current ROMs you have the best of this RUU as well as all the work the devs have put into bug fixes. As for the radio, I have flashed the 2.42.00.03.10 radio myself and the results were great. However, I have read a couple posts about bricks doing so. It is really a crapshoot when it comes to the radio, or so I have read.

I am unsure of this new sense that you are talking about! I have found absolutely no bugs whatsoever and it really does not run any different than any of the other roms that I have run!
