Getting ready to ditch my Hero/Android

Well this is becoming ridiculous. 2.1 has been out for 3 months now and Sprint still cant get it up and running while devs from SDX and XDA have had ROMs for weeks. By the time we ever see 2.1, it will be old news and 2.5 will already be here or well on its way. That means we will be forced to buy a new phone to get it, Sprint sure as hell wont be upgrading to it anytime soon. I just bought this Hero in Jan, its not even 3 months old.

Unless Google does something fast to streamline Android so all carriers are running current versions, more people like me will just get more fed up and leave Android. Say what you will about Apple being control freaks but at least they know how to run sh*t and 4.0 is going to offer some nice improvements. Android has the potential to be great, but its a giant mess right now and I am about done with it.

My phone works fine on 1.5 and I was never promised an upgrade. Aren't there only 2 phones with 2.1? And one of them just got it.

Thats becoming a really old argument, like 3 months too old. Alot of people (myself included) buy an Android phone to have a great up to date OS with the newest apps. 1.5 is now a full THREE updates old, so we have an old OS and no access to the newest and IMO best apps. The phone is rapidly becoming obsolete.

Adios!

Hope you enjoy whatever you end up with next... even though it doesn't get better.

Havent decided yet, will see what Sprint does in the next week or so. I forgot to mention the best part of all this. Since we are all inside of our 1 year upgrade, we will have to pay FULL retail price to upgrade to 2.5 this summer if we want an Evo. I am sure that will be a good $600-$700. Thanks Sprint!

So you got your phone in Jan? Doesn't that mean that you bought it when it was ALREADY out of date? boohoo. Obviously you knew what you were doing.

If you want 2.1, then root and install it. If you want to just expect a phone to have the latest and greatest, buy an iPhone and stfu. Sure apple just announced 4.0, but there hasn't been an update before that in what, a year? The Hero isn't even a year old, so it is still more up to date than any iphone until they get 4.0.

How many phones get full OS updates at all? Almost none. Google pumps out OS changes 10x faster than any other manufacturer and you cry babies act like you deserve them. Be thankful or be quiet.

I'm confused, do you want 2.5 for your Hero or the EVO? Sprint doesn't make either btw. Also, Sprint is the only carrier that gives you the full upgrade in 1 year AND costs you less that whole time. Sounds like they're really screwing all of us...

Yep but I (and millions others) was promised by dumbass Sprint sales people that it would be updated to the new OS "any day now" or "early Feb" or "mid Feb" or "late Feb" or "early March"....take your pick. They say anything needed to sell this phone and lets face it, Sprint themselves has lied about OS updates on other phones before. Nice way to treat customers

The Hero will never see a 2.5 update, which means if we want 2.5 which I am sure we all will, you will be forced to buy the Evo AND pay full retail for it unless you want to wait till your contract is up by the end of the year. By then, 3.0 will be out or on its way and it will take Sprint forever to upgrade the Evo to that....no way to win.

Not really... not many are so uptight about it. Let alone with the fact that if you CAN'T wait, 2.x "IS" available if you want it... But...

First, I couldn't care what other carriers or phones are doing other than the one I have in my pocket. Second, that same (non-rooted) phone in my pocket works just fine.

2.x would be nice, but not necessary! Oh, and btw, were you promised a bridge with that phone??? hahaha, just teasing... but really... enough already with the 2.x diatribe... It's so worn out.

Regards,

Yes, but the keyword you used is "WANT." You want the update, but that doesn't mean you deserve it. Also, if you don't know not to trust sales people then you should probably just shop online. I only pay attention to the corporate messages, which originally said Q1 2010, which hasn't ended yet. As for other phones, I have no opinion.

The whole having to pay for the full upgrade thing cannot be held against sprint. If you want a new phone, you have to pay for it. That is how it has always been and how it always will be. You cannot have the latest and greatest for free (speaking of hardware).

Not a single person made you buy the Hero and not a single person will make you buy the Evo.

It yoy don't like it, then get an iphone.

I understand his frustration. Some of you shouldn't be so quick to insult.

The fact is, there are situations where Sprint COULD BE wrong in terms of this situation. 1. If at this current time sales reps are touting a soon to come upgrade to 2.1 just to get sales and to decieve and
2. If Sprint tells us they are actively working on it, knowing they have no intentions of upgrading it, just to be total dicks about it.

If those above are the case, than I will be thoroughly pissed off at Sprint Corp.

However, I bought this phone not knowing wtf 1.5 was, let alone 2.1, 1.6, or 2.0. I bought it because it was this best phone on the Sprint network, which had access to a ton of apps, it was a good looking device, and was touch screen.

I do think that Sprint needs to be straight with us and let us know MORE progress on the update. If they say YES- IT IS COMING, just give us more time, I will be happy. If they say NO- IT DOESN'T WORK ON THE CDMA-1.5's current processor, than I will also be happy, and eventually upgrade sometime down the line.

SETTLE DOWN PEOPLE!

Let me preface this by saying, I mean no disrespect whatsoever by my comments here, and I hope you don't take offense.

I, like you, and like pretty much everyone else here is tired of the "waiting game" for 2.1. If I'm not mistaken, you, like myself refuse to root the phone for one reason or another. Personally, I'm not comfortable doing it, and after reading up on all the threads and whatnot regarding the different ROM versions floating around out there, it seems like its more work than I have time for to put forth in order to get everything working. Workaround this, patch that, install and wipe, install and wipe. I'm not putting down rooting, it's just not for me. I've talked myself in and out of doing it about 20 times, and have settled on not doing it, much like yourself (if I'm correct from some of your earlier posts).

That being said, I have to disagree with your comment on people getting fed up with the waiting and leaving the carrier for someone who updates more frequently. I think if you were to step back and look at the big picture (and this is true for pretty much everything), of the entire Hero owning community, a pretty generous estimate of 3% actually understand that the phone is "upgradable". Sure, everyone on this site knows what's going on, but your typical consumer who walks into Sprint or Best Buy or Radio Shack and purchases the Hero (or 99% of any smartphone) only buys it because it's "Cool" or "cutting edge". Once the money exchanges hands, the consumer walks out of the store and opens the box, that's the end of their "tinkering" with the phone. So, based on the estimate, that's 97% of people who own the phone who have no idea what Android 2.1 is. My guess is that if you were to ask a Hero owner what version of Android they have, they'd look at you as if you had 2 heads. The only phone that people truly have any clue as to it's "upgradable state" is going to be the iPhone, and that's simply because everytime they do something like an OS upgrade, it's a spectacle and makes news.

Again, I mean no disrespect and I hope you don't take it wrong.

On another note, and this is just my guess, with the "leak" of 2.1 out and fairly full functioning, I would guess it's pretty close to being released. Again, I have no knowlege of anything, and my guess is as good as anybody's, but I'm assuming by the end of the month is a good assumption. I remember when the Rev A/GPS ROM upgrade for the HTC Touch was "leaked", the official was dropped 1 week later.

" Sprint still cant get it up and running while devs from SDX and XDA have had ROMs for weeks"

These ROMS are great, and I just installed one myself and totally love it, however they have bugs that no company would stand behind. Sprint has been very tactful with how they have released their official comments and they have my respect.

Guess what? They never had to spend the money to update our phones, but they are because they know that the money they spend in the short-term to update our phones will affect their long-term profits.

For me, I will always have a rooted phone and probably a modified ROM in which I understand is not endorsed by Sprint and is a tad bit risky. Honestly, the update is going to be nice, but not that much better than what we have-a great reliable phone that is very customizable.

And at this point having the legitemate update is not even half as cool as having a rooted Hero with freshkitchen installed-Nandroid Owns! Can't wait to try the WIFI hotspot app!

Sprint's ONLY (most recent) official announcement about 2.1 was first half of second quarter, 2010. Well, first half of second quarter runs until mid-May, so they aren't late yet, period.

As far as I'm concerned, until mid-May passes without an update, you have no right in complaining that it's late or that we don't have it. ONE single phone in the US has been updated to 2.1, and we have been promised an update by mid-May, so it IS coming (especially considering the leaks that just came out). So quit complaining, the update will be here when it gets here.

You dont remember the Sanyo MM8500 and MM9000 do you? Sprint promised all kinds of updates and then new phones came out and the updates never came. Remember the Samsung Instinct? So many updates, programs, and apps were promised and what did Sprint do? Released a new and improved instinct HD and never released anything. They have a history of doing this...

I didn't say that they WILL release an update, simply that until their deadline (mid-May, barring any technical problems) passes, you really have no right to complain about it not being here yet.

The fact that the leaked versions of 2.1 exist is proof enough that sprint is indeed planning an update in the very near future

Just my 2 cents: I love my Hero. I know what version my phone is running. :) Sprint is by far THE most cost effective provider out there. I got rid of my Palm Pre because it gave me nothing but problems.

I love my Hero. I am keeping it! If 2.1 comes out in May, I'll be excited. If it doesn't, I still have an amazing phone!!

You just got your hero didn't you? The love affair with it will fade pretty quick, especially when you realize all the fantastic apps you can't download, and you will want an upgrade as bad as the rest of us.
