What is the protocol for porting a Rom. Personal use and private use?

Who's roms can you try? Guess you need their Ok to start? Which I did not do.
I messed with a few that are booting and some issues but didn't ask anyone. I just did it to do it and see what it was about. If I am violated anything I apologize.

Well it seems we step all over the manufacture's feet most of the time. As far as any DEV's feelings, most (especially here) welcome aditional development. Just give credit where credit is due. If you look at most ROM you will see a "thank you " list. If you look at a bunch of the ROM you would see that it's open source.

Basicly don't try to pop up and say you did it all your self.

Ok. Sounds good. Thanks for answering. I would like to try it out and get a feel for it without upsetting anyone. Maybe that would be a step that leads to doing more for everyone and helping in some way in the future.

Thanks again.

You could always help me out. I have a crazy life with lots of starts and stops. I can have you up and running in a day, and have tought you everything I know in about 6 hours of work. Maybe 7 as I am in a steep learning curve.

If you go to xda they have a guide to porting stuff like lewa ROM which I am working on. That's how I got started and I got lewa running just signal problems. I'm actually working on windows 7 porting to this phone to and I do it without permission didn't think I need any. But I do let ppl test em out. Im going to try and make my own custom mtdev boot animation for mtdev. I may not be apart of it but its just my lil token to those guys

Out of curiosity, what do you need to know to develop for a ROM? I know you need Java and XML (If you even count XML) to make Android apps, is it the same for ROMs?

I started without knowing jack. I just figgured that some of the things that I started with would be easy enough to figure out. I was wrong, but I found my way around. Still learning though (got a book now). I would recommend starting with a known working ROM and pick something to play with. Then ask lots of dumb questions until they get smarter and you succede. You might even fix something. You might be like me and find something that was easy, but it was hard for you and now it's easy. (ramble ramble)

Anyway, look for my setup thread and ask lots of questions. And run your favorite search engine to death.
Maybe even pick up a book.

And oh yeah, java helps. Maybe it would be better to say that learning how Android apps use Java helps.

That would be great to do. However, to be honest and upfront, I maybe have a few minutes a day to do anything phone related and the weekends I have a hour or so. I would love to read what your reading though. Is that possible ? maybe to get more familiar with things for now?

What I did to start was used my kindle app to read the beginnings of several books and bought the "for dummies, 6 in 1 for android developent". I think I will go back to the library and grab this Java book that I borrowed. I hope with the Java basics I can better understand the Android developent. There are things that the A D book talks about that still go over my head. It might be a weak brain, lack of sleep or a lack of bases.
