"unknown" appearing in call history

i've been dealing with this for quite a while - i'm finally just getting fed up with it to the point where i'm actually doing something about it

i use GV exclusively

probably half of the entries in my phone history appear as "unknown"

its also hit-or-miss if the contact's name appears when i dial out or when they're ringing in

also, when me and another contact call each other back and forth several times, sometimes their info appears, sometimes they appear as "(unknown)" -- its baffling me

can anyone suggest a fix?

Download contactsync from the market, and convert your contacts to Google contacts. Sync them to a gmail account, and do a hard reset. That should take care of the problem. And remember what applications you had and download them again.

no - that's not going to work for me

i need my contacts "in the cloud"

i use soocial to keep contacts between three gmail accts synced up

so, storing contacts only on my phone won't work

Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one. I see it as well. I, like you, use Google Voice for about 1/2 of my calls. So far I have not found a solution.....

for the record, i'm not sure if this is a google voice thing or an htc/hero/sense thing

but it would be interesting to hear how widespread this is - so if you have it, post it up here and on google's help site

Based on the 2 similar issues you guys are having, it sounds like a GV problem. I use GV only for Voicemail, I dont have this problem.

Maybe try a few hours without GV and see how that goes.

thats a good idea but.. i use GV for work - that's how my clients reach me

so, turning off GV wouldn't be good

I have never used GV so I have no working idea of exactly how it works, however I do know what causes Sprint to kick back that "unknown" in the call history and SDscorch I will bet that at a minimum this will explain why you have the unknown problem when calling back and forth between a contact several times. Its the contact that actually triggers the problem, when they call you from within voicemail. For some reason Sprints voicemail will kick out the "unknown" when a contact calls you from within the voicemail system after listening to the voicemail that you left them. The solution, either leave less messages or tell your contacts to direct dial more.
