Help How do i add/delete words in the dictionary?

Hi - I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 recently updated to Jelly Bean 4.1.2

My problem is that i can no longer find how to add/delete words to the dictionary. I'm using the default Samsung keyboard and English (UK) language.

I've searched through Settings > Language and Input > Samsung Keyboard, but can't find how to access the dictionary.

I'm pretty sure i've been through all the settings, but maybe just missing something.

After plenty of searches on forums, i can't find anyone else having the same problems and all answers / routes now seem to be out of date and not matching my phone.

Any ideas? Cheers!

nope, cant see it myself, wouldnt mind knowing where it is either i use swiftkey keyboard as my default and can find it on neither

I've found the solution!
It seems there is no longer 'a place' to edit words as you used to in ICS.

To edit, start typing in a new message. When a word comes up in the predictive area you want to remove, simply long-press it. A dialogue box will then ask if you want to remove it from learned words.

I think all words you use that aren't already in the dictionary are automatically added.

It's a little different, but i guess it works.

Hi Carl. Thanks for your post. The only one on this subject I could find. I have exactly the same issue but the problem isn't removing words its adding them. For example my phone has now (since updating ) forgotten my surname and email address. It simply won't learn them and there's no way to make it. This feels like a backward step like Samsung have sold this function to SwiftKey. My phone made them have a Capitol letter. It appears suggested words are more crowd sourced than personalised as it often suggests words which I would never use or are currently trending in the news etc. This is all confusing and alarming when I just want it to learn my bloody surname, something nokia mastered a decade ago.

Try using Perfect Keyboard Free. Much better than the Samsung keyboard. It has very good predictions (although it doesn't predict the NEXT word like Swiftkey), and you can add words to the dictionary in the following way. Type the word then tap on the word in the row of suggestions. Then it isolates the word with an arrow next to it saying "tap to add to dictionary." I think this is a really awesome keyboard, and it's FREE . The auto-correction features are selectable and very intuitive, and there are loads of features I can't even go into now because it would be off topic.

Like, i type with this oldskool format
Without auto-prediction so say i wanted to type "mno", with most keyboards id have to press the "6" key.. wait atleast a second, press it twice.. wait.. press it 3 times. With this keyboard, i can make that waiting time as short as i want so i can type a lot faster (Smart Keyboard Pro).
I should really learn to type qwerty but meh, im old

Ah ok. I assume then that Smart Keyboard Pro does have this feature. Have you told the dev of perfect keyboard this? Tell them they lost a customer to a rival because it lacked this feature.

Mind you the problem with Perfect Keyboard Free is that the free version is so good, there's no real reason to buy the Pro version.

Yeah im pretty sure i mailed them about the multitap thing but no reply. Pity. Smart Keyboard Pro is one app that if i could, id demand my money back. The pirated version was fine and the dev is an absolute disgrace.. zero support from them. I hate devs like that.. especialy with a premium app grr

Actually it was Google that made the change not Samsung. It is suppose to learn your words when you use Facebook, Twitter etc. If you are like me I don't use Facebook or Twitter that much and usually do not use full works, text speak, FWIW. Go figure.

What happens when you try? If I try, "x" comes up as the main suggestion in the suggestion bar and I can just press Space or tap the suggestion. This is on Samsung keyboard. Version from JB 4.1.2 I think.

Which version of Android are you on? Maybe this is an updated feature.

I think the only way you can do it on the Samsung keyboard is by turning off prediction in the settings, then you have to type oldskool style like funkylogik, repeatedly tapping each key to cycle through the characters, but it means you can double tap [wxyz] key and then press Space and you get a single "x".

Otherwise, (here we go again...) install Perfect Keyboard Free and you'll find it works much more intuitively. You can toggle T9 prediction from a key on the keyboard instead of going into settings. It can remember "x" as a word and you just tap once on the [wzyz] key and "x" will be highlighted and you can just press Space. I just tested it for you

I use the stock 4x3 keyboard with predictive text on, and as the weeks have gone by it has got better. It's learning words and predicting the next word, evens x's as I send them to my beloved every day, but don't tell the wife!!!

after almost one day, i succeed in adding a new word in galaxy s3 dictionary.
i also using t9 for many years now, and after easy-predictive s2, s3 seems to me imposible.
to delete words, it's very simple: long press on the word you want to delete, and xt9 will ask you if you want to delete it.
to add words...this is a different story; you must turn on the qwerty keybord, on landscape screen, write the new word, press space bar, and the word is added. now, you can go back to xt9, because the word was added in the dictionary.
i hope you will find this usefull

Ccristiann but if you add words that way as soon as you have to turn off your phone it will lose the new words added. It doesent add the words permanently, at least for me the new words are forgotten when I have to restart the phone

Was hoping someone who creates cfw would change this feature back to how it should always have been. I don't want to download another keyboard because of somebodys foolish error!

If your phone is rooted you can download and use the S2 keyboard, available here:

You need to copy it to the system/app folder using a root explorer.
