HTC Camera Quality?

Let me first apologize if this has been raised elsewhere, as I searched the forums and then perused the similar threads that the forum generated for me to check, and I didn't find the answer I was looking for. I realize that the Incredible will have an 8.0 or 8.1 megapixel camera with dual flash and all of that; however, how do HTC cameras, in general, stack up to other manufacturers' mobile phone cameras? Before I purchased my Droid, I had a Samsung Omnia for just short of a year, and the photos I was able to take on the Omnia's 5 megapixel camera were leaps and bounds more impressive than what I've managed with the 5 megapixel camera in the Droid. This isn't surprising to me in the least, as I was the owner of a black RAZR and blue KRZR while I was on AT&T, and their cameras were vastly inferior to the cameras LG were putting in their phones at the time. (That's perhaps not an apples-to-apples comparison though, as I know the LG phones were actually megapixel resolution versus the Moto phone's VGA/SVGA resolution, but the impression stands that perhaps cameras aren't Motorola's strong point, something the Droid is seemingly affirming.)

So, with that out of the way, can anyone who's owned an HTC phone and a non-HTC phone with similar resolution cameras on-board give me a comparison? Or at least point me in the direction of a site or blog where one's been done?

the nexus one takes some pretty impressive pictures. I'm hoping the Incredible will have something better than the one in the nexus one(picture quality-wise), which would give it a pretty awesome camera if you ask me.

I have the Eris. It has a 5 MP camera, no flash. It takes great pictures. I'm sure everyone will be very pleased with the Incredible's performace unless it has autofocus/flash issues like the Droid did.

I know at least with the Eris, there were video and picture comparisons and the Eris outperformed the Droid in both low-light and high-light. It just doesn't have flash.

I wish they'd post (or if they do I knew were to find it) the size and quality of the sensor that the camera is using. That has MUCH more to do with picture quality than MP does.

I'd like to echo that thanks to everyone who has replied. Your input is greatly appreciated as I attempt to make the decision to keep my Droid or jump to what would be my first HTC phone (I've had 5 Motorola phones to date, an LG Voyager, and a Samsung Instinct). I'm definitely going to have to give the Incredible a hands-on at my local Verizon store before I make a final decision, but as much information as I can compile in advance should make the process significantly easier.

I went from a Nokia N95 to a HTC hero and must say that i was "incredibly" disapointed with the camera in my hero and i have decided that i will not buy a new phone before :

1. HTC makes a new android phone with a camera atleast as good as the one in my old nokia N95 or

2. I give up on HTC making camera's that are comparable to kids play camera's and buy some other brand of phone.

I will never ever again buy a phone with a camera as poor as the one in the hero...It is appaulingly bad...5 Mpixel's but only able to take decent pictures in full daylight, outside and with a completely stationary target and a steady hand.

I had the Droid for a little bit then got rid of it for the Eris, and one of my biggest disapoitments was the camera quality of the Eris. I think that the Droid far out performed the Eris especially in low light situations

Now the N1 has a great camera (good enough I wouldn't see a need to even own a digital camera) and I would suspect the Incredibles will be slightly more impressive

The N1 camera was quite impressive and the shots were a lot better than my 3gs. Hopefully the incredible will improve on this even further.

Mega pixels are nowhere near as important as the actual image capture speed. Most phone cameras require an image to be still for 1 to 2 seconds. My N900 is about the speed of a normal camera, so my hope is the Inc is at least equal in speed.

Yes, it has 8 megapixels. But the photo quality.... man oh man. As long as you look at a photo on the phone itself, it is pretty good. Load it on a big computer screen and you'll scream. Bad, oh, so bad.
The JPG compression artifacts are the biggest I have ever seen. And that is with the setup in high quality!
I sure hope we can get some software updates to fix that. Else, even in full sun, the shots are *worthless*. Fun to send to another phone, or even perhaps on Facebook. But.. absolutely not worth keeping and cataloging in any iPhoto database. Too bad... I was hoping for better than mediocre.

Because people do a search and the thread comes up. We have no idea if there are more pertinent threads.

I agree with the comment about the artifacts. I was expecting with such a high megapixel count that I could crop photos, but I can hardly do that and get something that looks ok. As well, the colour is horrible, and I can't find anything on the camera to make it more realistic. It's way off on the red/yellow end of the spectrum. I have to photoshop most photos to cool down the colours, and I don't really understand what I'm doing or what the actual problem is that I need to correct.

The video isn't bad. But it seems way too easy to get into video - I keep having to delete videos that I started by mistake.

You revived a thread that's been dead for more than a year to talk about to quote a frustrated post about people digging up old threads when they should either start a new thread or find a fresher one.
