Help Battery drain is high

My Nexus 7 battery is discharging fast because of Mediaserver running using 72%. I can't find a way to remove it. Any suggestions?

You don't want to remove mediaserver.

Can you post a battery graph screen shot?

Were you listening to music?

I had a friend listening to music just before this happened. The battery graph has changed. Mediaserver was at 72% before it never even showed on the graph. before this my battery would last for a week or so without a charge. Now in 1 day my Nexus 7 has shut down due to no battery.

There was no media server under the running tab but 2 Google services running, so I shut both down and went back to Battery and media server is at 2%. I can't get rid of it but that's better than 72%. I sure hope that doesn't jump up again, cause it eat my battery in 1 day. Is there another way of removing this beast?

media server on mine is at 7 percent use, I don't think you can get rid of it but restarting the Nexus 7 should help it cut back on use.

You don't want to uninstall mediaserver. Its needed for multimedia related things as the name suggests.

Yeah sometimes it just goes crazy and keeps running and needs a smack in the reset button to straighten it out!

It's gone down to 5 % after a few reboots. I'm still not sure what happened 2 days ago to drain my battery. Media server was at 72 % at that time.

you tell us. what are you doing? what media sharing do you have setup? does your nexus sync pics with facebook, google+, etc? do you stream music or listen to music you've loaded to the nexus? have you recently installed any new apps, or removed old ones? have you changed any settings?

we can't tell you what exactly is happening. we can only hope to point at something and go "that's likely it". reboot into safe mode and check it again. safe mode doesn't delete anything, it just doesn't load/access any 3rd party apps. if you're still having a problem in safe mode, you'll likely need to wipe the nexus.

1. Press the Power button on your device.
2. Touch & hold the Power off option in the dialog box.
3. Touch OK in the following dialog to start safe mode.

to exit safe mode, restart normally.

fwiw you could try downloading the apps "All In One Toolbox(17 tools)" & "Battery Booster" from play store. With all in one toolbox you can see what processes are running and kill them temporarily if necessary, and with battery booster you can optimize the battery by stopping apps that are running in the background

no no no ... using battery managers or task killers can actually cause more problems. the OS is already setup to manage resources on it's own. if this mediaserver program is high battery usage, SOMETHING is causing it to happen. it'd be the equivalent of you putting a bandaid on a still-bleeding wound.

Thanks seVer. I went into safe mode and media server went to 6 %. First question-Is media server always there and is 6 % about normal.
I restarted and media server went to 7 %, but a Media app showed up at 27% with the force stop grayed out. I installed Arizona Republic App a few days back, but I doesn't appear to run anything before I open it.

You have to remember those percentages are relevant to everything else that is using battery.

Something could say 30% or 6% and its still using the same battery power depending on what else is going on.

I had the same problem, mediaserver was always in the top 3 in the battery usage list
I have downloaded an app called: wakelog detector, there I could see under the mediaserver the AudioOut_2 was the ?subprocess? keeping the pone awake. other posts suggested this could be caused by viber. And bingo, without Viber problem is gone! but all my friend are crazy about Viber, so I played with the config, and there is a setting in Viber for the wifi sleep policy. select "use device policy" instead of always on. now Viber behave nicely

For me on a native Nexus 7, it was the (google) Currents app (which you can't uninstall you can only disable). Before: 40% battery in 12 hrs with 60% of battery usage going to mediaserver. After disabling Currents, I've had 13% battery usage after 19hrs. Big difference!
