if what i read on hear is true the Eris is on its way out so i was thinking maybe they wont waist anymore time on the 2.1 update for the Eris. is it possible that they would give us the leak and if we want it fine if not live with 1.5. i was surprised that the droid got it before Eris did,you would of thought they would have got all the phones running 1.5 updated first since we are so far behind.i really like the eris got it running smooth and only have a few minor lag issues, was hoping the 2.1 update would fix them.just not sure about installing the leak version. whos fault is it we dont have it yet, verizon or htc? anybody else think the leaks are all we are getting?

It will eventually come, I think Verizon obviously has run into several issues in testing 2.1 and it just takes time to write patches and get the myriad of issues resolved. I know I test software for a living and fixes are sometimes extremely complex and tiresome for everyone involved.

Even if you jump to the Nexus or the Incredible later this month I can guarantee your going to find software issues with those phones also, no one including Apple has the time to test for a year and wait for the perfect build.

So if you've waited this long what is another month really and if you decide after a month the Eris still isn't your cup of tea well by then the Incredible will have been released and we'll know what issues or quirks it has and you'll be able to make a more informed decision.

I'm waiting for the Incredible and I hope it solves the frustration I'm having with my Eris but eventually I think I'm going back to Apple this summer when the new 4G comes out, so far I'm unimpressed with Google and Android.

HTCs fault. we will get it eventually, who knows how long. a large company like htc will not promise it to us and then just say nevermind.

I think it will come out OTA eventally. It just doesn't make sense that they have it in Beta and then just give up on it, like others have said, they have some bugs to work out.

As for getting 2.1, I was very scared to do it but then just decided to get it and I am very pleased I did! I think the phone runs better and it has apps that aren't available on 1.5 (like Google Gesture Search---a must have!). I have left my wife's Eris on 1.5 to wait for the update so we know when it comes, plus no reason to void both phones warranty's.

Whether they stop selling the Eris or not, there is already a massive install base. VZW has promised 2.1, it's nearly readoy to go. Abandoning it now would serve no real purpose (other than to infuriate people). What I wouldn't count on, however, is getting the next OS upgrade after 2.1 - it all depends on what the life cycle of the Eris is, something that was likely decided on before VZW ever sold their first Eris.

agreed also. i believe that 2.1 will be the last update to the eris. with all the new phones coming out that have such better hardware, i doubt they will continue to provide support for such an underpowered phone.
most likely any update after 2.1 will be too much for the eris, as they will be geared to such phones as the incredible and the nexus 2 with snapdragon processors.

Great post. Even when there seem to just be a few small bugs in software, it always takes much longer to get it ready for release than you think it will. That's why software companies suck at time estimates and always miss release dates. :p

can you root my 1.5? what are the advantages of rooting it compared to getting 2.1. i take it if you root the 1.5 you cant get 2.1. sorry but i have know idea what this root is.

there are 2 ways to get on the 2.1 software. root or leak. leak makes it JUST the 2.1, root gives you the 2.1 and about a bajillion other features. have you heard of jailbreaking an iphone or itouch? its similar.

and yes you can root your phone if its on 1.5
between root and leak just about everyone on here would reccomend root

All phones are discontinued at some point. The Eris was never a flagship phone but an entry level phone.

For the love of God, can we please stop all these 'the Eris is now not getting the 2.1 update' posts? Seriously, the phone was supposed to get the update in Q1 and they missed the mark. They will release it. The Droid 2.1 update got pushed back itself and it came out.

Seriously, if you like the Eris, I do love mine, then where does the problem part come in? Its a great phone, it IS getting the 2.1 update--when they are ready to release it-- and all of these posts are just adding gas to a fire that has not been lit yet.

It is coming out. It is late. If you base all your decisions about whether or not to buy a phone due to something better coming down the pipeline, then you will never buy a phone ever!

The Eris does a great job with apps and web browsing. I get my email and yeah, sometimes it does lag a little but, it happens with all electronics.

Seriously, stop these posts now! It is coming. Yes, I do work for Verizon.

I gotta admit i was one who didn't think they would root their phone, i thought i would wait it out. But then i decided that having control over how my phone functioned down the road instead of leaving it to chance was something i needed. I like how my phone functions, i like the layout and i like the apps i have installed. I also like knowing i can make a full backup of it and restore it to how it is now if something were to get screwed up down the road. I feared that one day the 2.1 ota update owuld come and prompt me to do the upgrade, once the upgrade was done i'd be left with a pretty much virigin phone, meaning i'd have to spend all that time setting things back up again. So as long as i was going to have to do it down the road anyhow, why not just bite the bullet, get it over with and gain some cool features along the way? I have a new skin, i'm running the latest 2.1 os, i have google navigation, i have wireless tethering (works great btw), i can make a backup of all apps and settings with titanium backup, and i can make a nandroid backup of the entire flash memory to restore the phone at anything in the future if i need to. I could go on an on about the benefits and how i don't feel so helpless anymore about the future, but i won't. All i know is last week i felt like i was at the mercy of verizon and now i feel like my phone is doing everything it was meant to and more. I don't have to worry about the future as i am now in control of it. Its quite a nice feeling and not something i would have if i was not rooted and still waiting for the ota update ;)
