Does anyone use Google Music Manager? I'm having a heck of time getting it installed on Megia 3 Beta, it did work with Mageia 2.

I keep getting this error message and I did install qtwebkit5.

Any thoughts?

Okay, I got this sorted out. I had to run this command:

# urpmi google-musicmanager-beta

It finally installed and running now! :smokingsomb:

has anyone gotten sabayon 10 to work in live mode? I tried the kde version but it wouldn't give me a screen. Thought I would try safe mode if its not an install.

Just to update on this. Safemode didn't work either so I did some checking around and it seems that my ati driver is the culprit. I was able to disable the splash screen and remove vga=791 and all is now well

I'm finally through playing with Christmas toys and almost ready to stick Mint on the computer.

I have older files I downloaded and installed from - FX and TB ESR for example that I can grab the downloaded file for .
But I'd also like some stuff that is in 11.04. I don't want the new install of Skype. The more MS gets involved with it the less I like - but daughter uses it. Any way I can still access the repository for 11.04?
I'd also like the card games that are in the new Kubuntu repository. Someone said they are all available, but I have no idea as to how to access them.

I also have to hunt for the exact wording for the command line. My mind goes blank and reverts to whatever DOS I remember.

I want to back up everything before I install. Can anyone help, please?

if you want older software you can simply add the PPA to it. that is how i replaced LibreOffice with OpenOffice. Kubuntu uses MUON package manager, which is part of KDE. i think you can separately install both to regular Ubuntu though.

if all you want to do is simply upgrade your distro you can make sure your /home folder is on a separate partition and then it doesn't get wiped on a reformat/install. this way your apps and settings are preserved.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the ubuntu installer should see the windows install, and offer up a dual boot as an option.

Alias's are like dos macro's right

I think you can put them in your $HOME/.bashrc file

I'm not sure what a dos macro is, but in unix an alias is just a 'shortcut' for a command. A common one is ll as opposed to ls -al

I just installed a minimum KDE4 on my system, since I need to test it for any issues that I'm seeing with Gnome 3. I need to know if the issues of crashing is caused my Mageia 3 Beta or Gnome 3, since Mga is a KDE based distro by default.

After a few weeks of using KDE4, I must say it's looking better then I remember. I haven't switched back to Gnome 3 yet and really enjoying it.

It looks like some of the issues with G3 may be the problem because I'm not having any since using KDE. But I must remember, Mageia is a KDE distro, so all others are treated like step children! :smokingsomb:

It looks like they're locking down Flash. Not much we can do about it.

Actually, there is. I did it. But I'm not going to post how. And I'm still going to do the double-uploading thing for videos of mine that I want friends/relatives to be able to download, and not tell them about my workaround.

If you're forgetful, you can set up a cron job to do the cleanup.

It's not that big of a deal. I mean, I'm PAYING for 'unlimited' space on all of my domains' servers, but I found out the hard way that they get testy about what exactly that means. I had backed up several hundred GBs of data on one domain's server. I had intended for it to be temporary...but I forgot all about it. Until I got a stern warning from the hosting company.

The greater issue is that lots of Internet-based businesses are getting serious about making profits. The days of free, or even cheap Internet services are going away. They're not leaving much room for free and easy.

Right, I understand that, but with YouTube videos that are not restricted as far as their uploaders are concerned should be made available for download.

If you take the time to really explore the ZILLIONS of customization possibilities, I doubt you'll ever leave KDE!

Currently running Fedora 17 with Gnome 3 and Sabayon 10 with KDE 4. I actually down graded from fedora 18 as I do not like the way Gnome is going and I especially don't like not having customization in nautilus. I prefer single click to double click for instance. (I get this with the fish one ) Gnome seems to be becoming more like that glass and fruit companies

Linux has always been very customizable. I really hope they don't walk away from that. I had recently ran PC-BSD which I would still be running had it not had the issue of denying me access to my external usb drives. An issue that could not be ignored.

That is where running a Window Manager comes into play. One of the good things about Linux, one still have choices!

Yup... Windows especially. Possibly iOS and Mac OS X as well. Closed walled garden app stores, this is how you must use our OS, NO customising or tweaking, etc. Probably a dumbing down, make them easier and more appealing for your granny to use.

That's the beauty of a GNU/Linux OS, you don't have to use Unity if you don't want to, you have a choice.

Windows RT on the other hand. You're stuck with the IMO "Fisher-Price" like Metro UI and whatever MS chooses to have in their walled garden. And that's it.

Back in the day, if a noob wanted to have an 'easy to use' computer, they bought a Mac. if they wanted a computer that was difficult but more usable, they bought an IBM PC-XT w/ DOS, or for the real hobbyist, a Radio Shack TRS-80 with CP/M.

Those days are long gone. even the early attempts at dumbing down the PC platform in the 1990s with MS Bob and Packard Bell Navigator were flops. and there were more who were resistant to computers than there are now. today, my mom could get a wireless printer going where i could not. and i am an A+ certified pro. my grandmother can use Win7. so it really is not necessary and i can see it going the same way that the early attempts did.

it is even coming back to the automobile market. remember the digital dash and talking cars? *beep* Your keys are in the ignition! *beep* your washer fluid is low! it's getting more advanced but i see a rehash of the 1980s again.

Trouble is, I think there are many who just can't be safe, don't really know they're doing, or shouldn't be trusted with Windows in it's current form at all....two words.....Chinese botnet.

Was in Hubei Province last New Year, staying with a friend's family. Their Haier Genuine Windows 7 Home Basic laptop was filled with all sorts of malware and nasties. They didn't really know what they were doing with it. They're peasant farmers, and not really familiar with modern tech, apart from TV. They bought the laptop, so they could stay in touch with their sons and daughters. I think a locked-down appliance type internet device would great for them. Something like Windows RT or iOS. It's here, where budget Android tablets have been doing really well. Most people just use them for IM and e-mail.

For some people I think there might be no hope with tech. One of my students is an 8 year old girl. Parents bought her a new retina screen MacBook Pro(They're quite rich), to help her with education. They couldn't even work out how to download apps from the App Store in OS X....seriously.

so it really is not necessary and i can see it going the same way that the early attempts did.

That's the way MS seems to be going this time, and committed to it AFAICT. We'll see how it turns out, and what the future holds for them.

That's why I like my limits well defined and in writing. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I think there's a setting that allows me to enable downloads if I want to. But IME most of the videos that I want are locked down. Although there may be ways of taking the forbidden videos anyway, I don't want to get sued to death by the MPAA!

aren't the GPWS warnings often heard the last few seconds of an airline pilot's life? in most cases the only time you hear 'WHOOP! WHOOP! PULL UP! PULL UP!' is when the large jet is about to smack nose-first into the ground! it does make one hell of a cool ringtone though.

Too bad they couldn't have gotten William Daniels to do the electronic voice alerts in the old New Yorkers. that would have been neat since all the Knight Rider fanfare was going on and all. as i recall most of them used the same voice engine that was used in the Speak n' Spell toy.

I ran it awhile back during my distro hopping days, then development had stalled for a long period, I got rid of it.

It's good it has made a comeback.

Is the Max Limit 4 / Min limit 7 onretry that's the problem and if so how to reset retry limits to default?

Connected via Ethernet, downloaded all updates from repo, wpa-supplicant was the culprit. new version installed, all good now.

it was the first time I had heard of it myself. Its only for live mode though right now. the older version wouldn't pick up my video
