Straight Talk version

I'm looking into picking this up and was wondering what the newest version of Android the phone can support without rooting, and if I do root for something newer how is the performance on the phone compared to how it comes stock?

Not sure what you mean, but I have a Straight Talk TracFone Samsung Galaxy SII.
It's stuck on Gingerbread, and TracFone told me it will not be upgraded.
It has numerous features disabled, and is a disappointment. It frequently loses its data connection.
It also cannot be rooted. I've tried 6 methods, and because there are so few of this exact model, it has little or no developer support.
Straight Talk service and customer service are also disappointing.

I also have the straight talk galaxy s2. it's a nice phone and does what it has to do quite well. but it's locked up REALLY tight and there is basically nothing you can do to it. so if you like to fiddle around or are curious about things, this might not be for you. a person a few posts back mentioned the Nexus 4 which goes foe the same price and the reviews are just about comparable. it's unlocked. you can get the Galaxy at Walmart with a 15 day return policy. I haven't had any problems with data disconnect.

Actually, XDA members have been able to root it and install roms.

I got dizzy trying to follow the instructions on that link. Isnt there something MUCH MORE SIMPLE to follow out there?

Thanks guys, that's what I was afraid of really. I've looked into the Nexus 4 but my main gripe is waiting for shipping. I know they were out of stock for a good while not long ago.

there are 2 things that I tried to do which were unavailable.
1; tried to access service mode option#5 to set the volume controls. all other options were OK except #5 which wouldn't respond.
"The general fix is to access the service mode, and alter the default max volume for a headset call as follows:

This will open the service mode menu.
Select option [5] AUDIO
Select option [1] (VOICE CALL)
Select option [2] HEADSET
Select option [1] Volume

I imagine there is more stuff that's locked down. These are for me the only two things I've tried to access so far. But I've done alot of google searches and I'm definitely not smart enough to follow the directions on the XDA forum, for example, to open the thing up. probably for me just as well, because I'd probably brick the phone.

I hear ya on not smart enough to follow those directions on XDA. I am pretty tech savvy but never done this before. If someone were to write those directions out for a beginner or much more easy to understand I would go for it. I read them now and can somewhat understand them but having never done this before, I am not ready to throw $300 down the drain for a few things that are locked down by Straight Talk. The one thing that does piss me off though is not getting JellyBean. That I do want.

One other thing I found is that its not working with Samsung Kies. It doesnt recognize the phone. 4 hours the other night trying to get it to sync on my laptop and desktop. Aggravating to say the least. I guess with Kies you can get system updates which I assume would be JellyBean if the dam thing would sync up.

Wheres the 20 min YouTube video of someone rooting this thing? We know you are out there!
