Wanted: Videos of Lagging on Your RMHD or RHD

I'm not sure I'd take the time to record it and post it here just to prove it to a few people who are lucky enough to have lag-free phones and don't believe that anyone else has problems.

The lucky few that have lag-free phones? Lag-free has got to be the normal, majority condition of RMHD's.

I asked for videos because I want to know what people consider lag. If you exit Chrome by pressing the Home key and you can see the circle widget redrawing for 1/2 a second, is that lagging?

For what its worth, I can testify that I also see the lag from time to time. It takes 5 to 10 seconds sometimes for the home screen to redraw when exiting certain applications. It's a pain but I can live with that.

I'm sure many other people out there are experiencing the same lag, it's just very few of us that are bothering to post about it.

I actually keep checking this forum just hoping that somebody figures out the magic solution to stop it...

As for the definition of lag, I consider anything (opening/closing apps, swiping through homes, etc) taking longer than 2~3 seconds or more as lag. Certainly the days of super lag like 30 seconds or more are long gone and don't exist on RHD or any other new android phones today.

There are some elements in stock launcher of RHD causing lags as I mentioned before. Circles widget, swiping to quick setting on the left of home often stutters, home screen redraws when backing out of camera. I'm coming from Galaxy Nexus and that phone in JB has none of these lags at all and it's butterly smooth. So I disabled circles widget, adjusted transition scale in developer setting and switched to Apex launcher. Still not perfectly lag free, but much better this way.

Heck, you guys are incredibly patient. I would consider a ONE second an unacceptable lag when opening or leaving an app. It sounds like nothing and on a video would look like nothing but with a fast dual processor none of us expected any delay when entering or leaving an app. Think about it... One Mississippi... It's a. Long time to wait after pushing a button.

reminds me of Louis CK joke...."it's going out to space....give it a second!!" :)

Kind off topic but how long does it take for your HDTV to change channels? I ask because I'm considering dropping cable and getting a satellite provider, but when I 'test drove' the sat service I learned it takes 6 - 8 seconds to change channels. That's a deal breaker for me.

In the old analog TV days channel changes were instantaneous. Then digital TV had about a 1/2 sec lag. With cable (Comcast) and HDTV it's about 1 1/2 secs. But 6 - 8 secs for satellite--no way!!

So next time you're watching TV notice how long channel changes take and if you remember please post your results.

I have directv and it's anywhere from 2 to 4 seconds. Never seen 6-8 seconds. Yeah, not instantaneous, but they have 4 or 5 birds and with the different polarities, I understand that lag. You get used to it. No PIP either. But the selection is what I like (and the ability to throw a receiver at any location I may reside without dealing with TimeWarner). At least the "lag" on my RMHD is less!:p

You should visit a friend with satellite and see for yourself.

I did the test drive at my a Mom's house with Direct TV. I took a video with my RMHD. I then called Direct TV and asked them about it and they said it was normal for tuner boxes with DVR to take 6-8 secs. My Mom does not have DVR and I saw 4-6 secs lag with hers. I don't think I could get used to that.

Sometimes it helps if you lock in the output resolution at 1080P, I, 720P etc.

And change the banner duration so it "info about the channel" goes away quicker.

hi, i just joined the site in hopes that someone will eventually figure out what the problem is. i *definitely* have lag - it is not even close to a matter of perspective or opinion. like others have said, it's not all the time, but it was way past the point where it becomes annoying, especially on a freaking dual-core. sometimes i wish i still had my samsung rogue rather than this thing. that's how bad it gets. i have uninstalled various apps, tried various settings, though i am not an expert. i would take video of it but i'm not sure i have to anything to take video with except the phone itself. i suspect that a good number of people are having the same experience as me- lag far beyond what anyone would call a subjective opinion. like some have said already, sometimes it's just 3-4 seconds, other times it seems like 30 but it's probably 10 or so.

my RAM usage does appear pretty high - often about 85%, even when I'm not running apps in the background except things like swiftkey or avast. avast is only using 0% of CPU and 8 MB of RAM according to Zapper Task Killer - though weirdly my CPU usage is jumping up and down as I watch it - from 5% up to as high as 60-something % , with no app using more than a couple %, ie, not nearly 60% being accounted for. also, this happened when i had outlook antivirus previously.

some have found that the "setting storage" app or process uses more and more RAM the longer the phone is on... mine seems to do that but i'm not sure that accounts for all the lag. i have a calendar widget, a google reader widget, a weather widget, and a notepad widget running. but these don't seem to be the problem, at least they're not showing up as using a lot of RAM or CPU as far as I can see.

It would be very interesting to see the how the ages of the various posters corresponds to the degree of annoyance with the perceived lag. While we have definitely become a society that expects instant gratification in every facet of our lives I wonder if those of us that are older maybe don't freak out at the occasional second or two of 'lag' as much as some of the younger people.

Those of us (like me) that remember dialing a rotary phone and really hating phone numbers with 9 and 0 in them probably don't notice or mind as much as those that don't even remember when phones had cords and were attached to walls!

Btw, 3 weeks, 40 posts, no videos. Just sayin'...

I don't think my RMHD "lags" at all, and now I find out it's because I'm old. (I did do a factory reset) :D

I don't have directTV (my brother does), so I can't walk you through the menus. But if you goto the Menu, there is a SETTING or VIDEO Options or something like that. It may be under HD settings...again, I don't know it word for word. Try digging around and you'll see the output resolution setting and the banner duration. Good luck.

You may want to try uninstalling the task killer and the AV to see if that's affecting you. For all we know, it's killing a motorola service of some sort and it's respawning. And the obligatory, "did you factory reset it?" has to be asked.

hey, thanks for the suggestions. i replaced the built-in home screen with nova launcher and that actually seems to have helped a lot. it's not flawless but it's much better and within my tolerance range, as opposed to before, which, like i say, was beyond just a subjective "maybe it lags, maybe it doesn't." but i'm going to continue tweaking the setup and what apps i'm using. it was lagging very soon after i got the phone - it's not old at all - and so i didn't think a factory reset would be the answer. anyway, it's good enough now. thanks.

FYI - I got a replacement rmhd and sent my orig back. The new one has ics, so i've blocked the new os update, and been able to eval the phone again with ics. No diff in lag b/t the two, phone is fast but jerky and batt life is the same or maybe better, no diff in call/quality. Camera may be a little better with ics too. What I get back is HDMI quality, silent mode, UMS storage, etc. Very happy with ics and no plans to go any further with os updates until next phone upgrade. UMS for the sd card is so unbelievably more convenient and fast than MTP.

Any way to block the annoying update install alert that comes every 12hr or so?

Lag is subjective to what a person can tolerate. The bottom line is I've owned a S3 on ICS, played with a Droid DNA a lot in the store, played with my sons M and there is no excuse why this phone doesn't run as smooth as these other phones. M has the exact same hardware/software except the screen and even the S3 is closer to hardware specs even the screens are the same not to mention touch wiz is layered heavier than Blur. Something ain't right and I hope a fix is incoming. We shouldn't have to root to have this phone work smoothly.

Now l would call what I experience lack of smoothness than lag but sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds to do things. Not frequent but enough to annoy me. I'll try to see if I could come up with a video but I really don't have the equipment. The funny thing is my single core OG RAZR ran smoother on ICS.

For those of you that need to see the difference please go to your nearest Verizon store put your RHD next to a RAZR M and swipe, press the app drawer, and press the home button to get the preview home screens and u will see the difference in smoothness.

Now we all here are tech heads and when we buy we want the best or at least close to it. When we purchased this phone we expected S3 level or better. Things like the camera which is good to me I can deal with because in exchange I get great build quality and the best radios. Can't change that but I expect it to run as smooth as the S3. Just saying!

Take a look at this video I posted of my phone. Note that I have Circles Widget installed. I guess I don't see what you are talking about. :D
