Help Desire tethering on Mac?

Has anyone managed to tether their Desire to a Mac without third-party software or rooting?

As the HTC Sync software controls the PC end of the tether connection, and it's not available on the Mac, this is annoying.

HTC support was f-all help:

My support request:

I am looking for instructions to tether my Desire for internet access with my Mac (OSX Snow Leopard) There are only details for using HTC Sync, which is only available for Windows.
HTC's totally moronic reply:

To be able to sync your htc desire you would need to use the software htc sync, unfortunately htc syn is not compatible with MAC it works only with WM PC. HTC doesn't support MAC and we do not have any application. We heard that MAC has created the missing sync for HTC users, but we cannot help regarding this application, as we haven't made this. Please contact MAC support for more details
So, when I connect the Desire via USB and choose Internet Sharing from the connection menu, I get a new android network adapter appear, but I can't seem to get it to connect.

Any ideas? Or will I have to stump up for pdanet? And is that any good?

Thanks. :)

I asked a smilar question, and one helpful reply was as follows:
You do not need to root your phone to tether the connection.

PdaNet free edition - Cyrket works on macs.

It it worth noting that HTTPS pages will be blocked after 14 days and you will need to buy the full version: PdaNet for Android Purchase Agreement

Thank you to Yenzehn.

I still haven't got 'my' Desire, as I'm still umming and ahh-ing a little. Would be interested if you do try this app to see how it works.

You should not need any additional software.

At least on my Ubuntu machine as soon as I connect my Desire to the computer and select internet tethering, it connects right away.

I'd assume it's the same (or similar) for MAC.

Could you check the connection that Ubuntu creates? What sort of connection is it? GPRS, DUN, ?? What settings?

Thanks,
Matt.

Im new to the forum, new to Mac, new to the Desire.

Could someone provide a step by step outline of how I step up the Mac and Desire to tether. Please.

As Yenzehn points out ( and pointed me to Pda Net anyway :D ) it does come with full instructions, and although I haven't got it yet, it does look pretty straightforward to use.

Those who have used it may be better placed to give further details, but it looks like the Desire connects to the Mac via USB and then allows the Mac to access the internet via the data connection in the phone, so make sure you have a good internet access package with your phone.

If you want further info, then please ask - but try it first , it will be pretty straightforward.

Hello all,
anyone managed to get this working as it should on a Mac ( i.e no addtl software ) ?
I see a new network interface ( modem ) on the Mac but I cannot skip the configuration ( username, password etc ) and go directly to setup cnx.
This is really annoying, especially if it runs out of the box on Linux ...
Thanks for your help !

I am a new Htc Desire owner and have looked through forums trying to work out how to tether my Desire to a Mac book pro to allow the Mac to use my phones internet connection. After reading a fair amount and having numerous problems trying the suggestions and my own ill-informed attempts I think I might of found an alternative!

First switch on both devices, go to menu in Desire and switch on portable Wi-fi Hotspot, 2nd go to Airport (wifi) on the Mac and scroll down to HTC network, click and go GO GO.

It has take a 5 hr train journey to figure out how to do this and this post is being posted using the above method, with using my Mac via Htc desire for internet connection.

I hope this might be of use to people who have had problems with tethering!

I bought syncmate and it works better than HTC Sync. I'm very happy camper.

Now I'm looking for a tether in bluetooth mode for wifi

I tethered no problem for a year using pdanet. Worked every time. Until I went into Cspire store and they upgraded my operating system, so they said. From that day on my "mobile network" connection went down every time I hooked up the tether (using usb cable). Recently I bought a second, used htc desire, and it had system 2.1 on it so I figured I could tether using pdanet again. It will get closer: the "mobile network" connection stays on, the pdanet icon begins to blink green, but still no tether connection.
CSpire, for their part, says that it's not them but android 2.2 that killed the tether capability, and one tech told me that 2.3 is not supposed to be so restrictive. Meanwhile, someone killed my tether. Moral? Don't let anyone "upgrade" your phone at the store if your pdanet tether is working.
