Help How do you manually sync email?

I have a Galaxy S iii, and pop3 email (non-gmail). It works fine with scheduled sync, but I would like to be able to manually sync instead, whenever I check my email. Is that possible? It seems like it should work if I disable email sync and hit the refresh icon in the email app, but that does nothing.

I have my exchange account set up that way. I just open the app and hit the refresh button in top right.

With my Exchange account, it doesn't matter if you have sync turned on or not, hitting the manual sync icon always prompts a sync for me.

Could it be an issue on the server side of whatever service you are trying to connect to?
