2.1 Leak Bugs and Fixes - Consolidated and Updated

This is an attempt to consolidate and update most of the common issues people are having with 2.1 and their solutions.

We already have an excellent stickied thread on this (compliments of Caddyman) and, in fact, that thread is where a lot of this information has been compiled from. The only problem I see with that thread is that the information hasn't been consolidated for a while, which can make finding solutions to a specific problem difficult.

I'd like to make it clear that I take credit for NONE of these resolutions; I'm simply consolidating them. I'd originally tried to credit each solution to the poster who first provided it, but in some cases this was unclear, or I couldn't find the thread where I first saw the solution posted so I decided it was better to leave credits off than half-ass it. if you believe you were the first to find a solution to one of these issues and you want credit, let me know; I'll do some research and credit you.

Thanks to all who have reported problems, and to all who fixed them - many of you have helped me directly and provided immense value to this community as a whole!

It's always a good idea to verify the MD5 checksum of a download to make sure you got the whole thing and that it's legit. I lost track of the "official" checksum, but when I generate on the 2.1v2 archive I downloaded, I get:

6E3A2BB96432276B0AF51BA6E7E1820C

You can get an MD5 checker here: MD5 Checker - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Remember - there is no root for 2.1 at this time. If you want root, do it before upgrading. Also, there is no rollback from 2.1 to 1.5. And yes, while it is highly doubtful, there is a very small possibility you won't get the OTA if you install the leak.

Symptom: Com.htc.bg force closes.
Cause: Syncing large numbers of Facebook/Twitter contacts causes force close.
Resolution: Remove Facebok and Twitter sync, or reduce number of synced contacts until error stops.

Symptom: Battery draining very quickly.
Cause: Firmware problems related to radio; causes device to think it has lost signal
Resolution: Go to Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use > Cell Standby. If "Time without signal" reads 50%, place the device into airplane mode (you may have to reboot the device after this). After you see the airplane on the status bar, turn airplane mode back off. You may need to repeat this every time you reboot your phone.

Symptom: Apps that access the browser do not work correctly.
Cause: Certain apps that launch the browser, or display images from the browser are not working correctly
Resolution: (Unconfirmed)Try a different browser (you'll need to select it each time or set it as default).

Symptom: Live Wallpapers and Google Earth are not available for Eris
Cause: Eris does not support either of these features.
Resolution: None. The Eris can't handle these.

Symptom: Google 2.0 Gallery and News and Weather Widget, and other apps not available for Eris
Cause: Certain 2.0/2.1 Android components are not included in the leak. Protected apps aren't showing up for the Eris in the Market.
Resolution: Your best bet is to Google search or post requests for the relevant .apk files and install them manually. DO NOT post requests for paid apps here, even if you've previously paid for them.

Symptom: Every time the device is rebooted, users have to log back into their Google accounts.
Cause: This was an issue with the first 2.1 leak.
Resolution: Install the second leak (2.1v2).

Symptom: Web pages are zoomed all the way out by default.
Cause: This is a new feature in 2.1.
Resolution: Go to Browser settings and uncheck "Open pages in overview".

Symptom: Haptic (key vibration) settings aren't working right.
Cause: 2.1 has added settings for haptic response in various places.
Resolution: Settings can be found at:
Settings -> Sound and display -> Haptic feedback
Settings > Language and Keyboard > Touch Input > Text Input > Other Settings > Vibrate when typing

General Tips
Most of these are not specific to 2.1, and will work on 1.5

Laggy Phone:
- Disable animations. Go to Menu > Settings >Sound & Display > Animation.
- Stop (or severely limit) using task killers. 2.1 does a much better job of managing memory Consider SystemPanel as a replacement for ATK.

Slow Dialer: keep the call history clear.

Slow or awkward keyboard: Consider Swype as a replacement. Once you get a feel for it, it's awesome.

Battery Draining Quickly (after "50% Without" issue resolved)
- Don't use the 2.1 HTC battery widget
- Reduce the number of apps that offer sync functionality or reduce the frequency with which they sync.
- Use SystemPanel or a task killer to find apps that are staying open.
- Turn off Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS when you don't need them.
- Haptic feedback is also a known battery drain. Consider turning it off.

Issues that appear to be affecting limited numbers of users or need more information
If you are experiencing these issues or have more information, please reply to this thread.

It would really help if those posting "new" issues that do not yet have solutions would provide more detail. It's all well and good to see that more than one person is having an issue, but if the rest of us aren't, there is a great chance that there is something funky with your setup.

Please indicate at least which 2.1 you are on, whether you are rooted, and any apps that you think might impact the functionality you are having issues with.

W4LLY says... "Yea, we can add that Facebook contacts don't sync for some of us."

L0stS0ul says... "I've been having issues with notifications. I have 3 email accounts that my phone syncs with. Sometimes, not all the time, the phone will vibrate like 4 times and then play the notification sound 3 or 4 times for an incoming mail. I'll go to the phone and there will only be 1 new email."

L0stS0ul says... "there seems to be a timeout period on the ball flashing for a notification. Usually when I get up in the morning and check the phone the ball won't be flashing but I'll have like 12 emails."

dracozny says... "Unable to format new SD card. endless notice about empty or damaged card... if you have amon recovery use the partition tool, if not then use a card reader with mini sd adapter to format the card using FAT."

bad05gtt says... "does anyone have the problem that you can make one phone call and then you have to reboot your phone to make another one....thank god i text more than i make phone calls !!!!!"

people almost completely refuse this--amazing that anyone still has them
There are a few apps that make having a Task Killer worthwhile (I'm looking at you, Pandora), but my preference has been to uninstall these apps rather than kill them all the time. If an app is badly written, I can live without it.

I want some control over apps (more than the 2.1 native "task manager" offers), but am pretty happy with 2.1's app management.

funny, pandora has been pretty good to me, its Slacker that is my problem child! Doesnt surprise their BB app crashed all the time, now on Android it will never shut down ;)

OP: Nice consolidation!

Can we add the issue where the ringer goes into silent mode (randomly?) and requires a reboot for your ringtone to work properly again? I know I'm not the only one who has seen this.

X2 - People think I am trying to hide from them. "Honestly, I don't get ringtones, but I do get the notification if you leave a voicemail"
"Yeah, right"
"No, seriously!! Ever since I updated..."
"So, you futzed with your phone and broke it?"
"No.... It's just a bug in the now OS"
"So, you broke it?"
"No! Shut up! dammit....."

I've been having issues with notifications. I have 3 email accounts that my phone syncs with. Sometimes, not all the time, the phone will vibrate like 4 times and then play the notification sound 3 or 4 times for an incoming mail. I'll go to the phone and there will only be 1 new email. It's not a huge issue, I mean it did get my attention :), but it's an issue none the less.

I've also noticed that there seems to be a timeout period on the ball flashing for a notification. Usually when I get up in the morning and check the phone the ball won't be flashing but I'll have like 12 emails.

Seems notifications are a little buggy in the latest release. Much better than the first 2.1 version though.

Has anyone been able to get this to work for Zillow? I changed the default to dolphin and it still won't work for me.

I'm going to remove Pandora as my whipping boy example, since folks are reporting it's not a problem. Honestly, although I had all kinds of problems with it, it's been a while since I had it installed, and it's possible that they fixed any issues it had - or that I was a noob and didn't know how to close it right ;).

There are a few additional issues that I've personally only seen a little discussion on previously, so I'm going to add them in their own section. If it turns out they are affecting large numbers of people, I'l move them into the main area. One thing that would be helpful is if those who are having the issues could post them in detail, and possibly post an Appbrain listing, so we can start to look for commonalities.

EDIT: seems my Pandora comment wasn't in the main post.

I haven't personally messed with this at all, and although I did see a post that indicated this should work, I never saw the workaround confirmed. My hunch is there is an issue with how the apps talk to the browser (any browser) via the OS, but that is just a guess. I'm going to go back and mark that resolution as unconfirmed, which I was tempted to do in the first place.

Glad I'm not the only one. :)

Thanks for adding it to the list.
