PLEASE NOTE: This thread is now outdated since it pertains to the leaked 2.1 ROMs. Anybody reading this should install the Official 2.1 Update.

UPDATED: Added "How to Update to DD10" at the bottom of this post.
UPDATED (5/2/10): Updated the links because of the SDX site move to a subdomain.

As a general note: If you are having problems with any part of the process the first thing to try is to download the files again and babysit the download. 90% of the issues happen because files are only partially downloaded (it happens a lot).

This is the basic, no frills step-by-step for those that don't want to read through the threads over at SDX.

Please note that all of the credit goes to the guys over at SDX (especially 123321 and joeykrim), I am just simplifying the info.

All I ask in return: for this info is that you visit SDX-Developers Forum and click on some of the advertising banners (Amazon.com) for example. If you buy from Amazon please use the banner at SDX! This helps keep their very valuable site alive.

All of this info, in some form, can be found in full at the following threads:
READ THIS FIRST! SDX Android 2.1 - All the Release Info
[How To] - Root Android 2.1 DD03 - v5

WARNING!
Following this procedure will wipe all of the data from your phone and cause it to act like it came from the factory. Make sure you make any appropriate backups!

And finally....You proceed at your own risk! I take no responsibility for what this may do to your device.

How to Flash to 2.1

1. Install the Sprint Update Utility (link to the Sprint Page):

- a. FIRST Remove any old Samsung Drivers (instructions here)

- b. Download and install (BUT DO NOT RUN) the Sprint Update Utility (Get it here) and (Sprint Instructions here)

2. Download and Flash the latest 2.1 (version DD03 as of this writing):

- a. Download 2.1 DD03 for Moment (Get it here) If that link doesn't work then visit this thread for possible updated mirrors.

- a.1 Depending on the mirror you may need to UnZip the file so that you are dealing with just the .tar file.

- b. Open Windows Explorer and go to the following path:
C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

- c. In the Binary path above Move the Stock ROM file (the only file in there) to somewhere safe.

- d. Copy the DD03 ROM file you just downloaded to this folder.

- e. IMPORTANT: make sure that the DD03 ROM file is the only file in the Binary folder!

- f. Run the Sprint Update Tool and follow the instructions. This will flash 2.1 to your phone.

- g. Let it do its thing and you now have 2.1 on your Moment!

....Yeah it is really that simple!

How to Root 2.1 (uses Root v7 as of this writing)

1. First make sure you have flashed the 2.1 ROM (ie do all of the steps above first).

2. Flash the Recovery 2.1.3:

- a. Download the Recovery 2.1.3 ROM (get it here)

- a.1 Depending on the mirror you may need to UnZip the file so that you are dealing with just the .tar file.

- b. Open Windows Explorer and go to the following path:
C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

- c. In the Binary path above Move whatever ROM (file) is in there to somewhere safe

- d. Copy the Recovey ROM you just downloaded to this folder.

- e. IMPORTANT: make sure that the Recovey ROM is the only file in the Binary folder!

- f. Run the Sprint Update Tool and follow the instructions. This will flash Recovery 2.1.3 to your phone.

3. Install Root v7:

- a. Download the joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v7.zip (get it here) and save it in the root folder of your Moment's SDCard.

- a.1 Important - DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE.

- b. Reboot into recovery - Turn Phone off. Then hold down: vol down + talk + end until the Recovery UI appears.

- c. Select Apply Update .zip from Menu

- d. Select joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v7.zip

- e. Apply and Reboot

You now have root!!

How to Update to DD10

First make sure you have flashed DD03 (from above) AND Installed the Recovery 2.1.3 (from above). The leaked DD10 is an UPDATE, not a replacement.

- a. Download Android2.1-DD10-SDX-update.zip (get it here)

- b. Download system_update_dd10.tar (get it here)

- c. Place both of the files above in the root folder of your SD Card

- d. Reboot into recovery - Turn Phone off. Then hold down: vol down + talk + end until the Recovery UI appears.

- e. Select Apply Update .zip from Menu

- f. Select Android2.1-DD10-SDX-update.zip

- g. Apply and Reboot (be patient, it will take a while)

- h. (Optional, but do this if you want root) - Performing the DD10 update will undo your Root. You need to follow the "3. Install Root v7" section above.

** Any Forum Moderators out there?? **

If possible I have a couple of requests:

1) Please change the title of this thread to say "dummies" instead of "dummy's"

2) Not to toot my own horn but can we get this thread stickied? It seems like it has helped a lot of people so far and It would be nice to keep it available.

Thanks!

what if my phone came with cl14 already what steps do i need to take

Doesn't matter what ROM you have on your phone. These instructions will wipe over it and install 2.1

as well when about do I have the phone to the usb

Step 1-f: "Run the Sprint Update Tool and follow the instructions". The Sprint Update Tool will guide you through the process.

as well how do save all my contact info

There are many ways. The easiest is to sync with your GMail account (you probably are doing this already). After you run the new ROM, and login again, it should all sync back to the phone.

That would save all my contacts and phone numbers? thanks!

Same thing for live wallpapers and anything else. You need to find a way to back it all up or reinstall. This procedure wipes your phone.

Ok, so I see people having all the live wallpapers, is that something i get from the market? Or install like I have with zedge but i know there's nexus one launchers and those cool live wall papers...is that something we have to flash too...

One thing, once I place that file DD03 in replace of cl14 i have to run the SW upgrage correct? Just want to make sure! Thanks! For all your Help!

This is kind of confusing to me. I flashed the 2.1 with Joey's recovery this morning, almost completely restored my phone settings, applications, and contacts, then added the live wallpapers and new gallery and didn't lose a thing. (I did wipe the phone to out the 2.1 with recovery on it though). Is this contrary than what you are saying?

Yes, replace the file and run the swupdater (your phone will be wiped, so have some fun restoring all your settings, it's worth it). The method I took to get the live wallpapers was to download a zip file from SDX and place it on my SD card. Then with phone off, enter recovery mode (talk, end, volume down, will only work if you have the 2.1 with Joey's recovery). Then I selected the option that was something like "Install from SD", selected the file installed, rebooted, went to the market, got a free live wall paper, then enabled it. I do have helix launcher running though (free on the market, love it), so that may have made it easier. Good luck.

can you explain what you mean (I did wipe the phone to out the 2.1 with recovery on it though) do I have to have some sort of recovery app?

This thread is about being simple and how to flash 2.1 and root. I really don't want to complicate it with how to do everything else aswell. All of the info you need is on the SDX forum, you could also start a new thread about wallpapers.

I hope you can understand.

Yes, after putting the DD03 ROM in the binary folder you need to run the update tool. I'm pretty sure that the steps already say that! :)

Joey's ROM is a partial flash. The 2.1 DD03 ROM will completely wipe your device.

Ramiss, thanks for this useful information. You have given information that on all the boards is not given. Others post information for users with advanced experience with this. Thank you for putting in this little part: - b. Reboot into recovery - Turn Phone off. Then hold down: vol down + talk + end until the Recovery UI appears. This simple step had me stuck and it took hours for me to find. Thanks for making it easier on everyone else. Question: how can we verify if we have root? I have SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3 installed and tried all the various methods to root. None worked. I just tried flashing V5 over V4 (is this okay?) and tried to uninstall an app through terminal emulator but it states its a read only file system. Am I doing something wrong or did I not achieve root? Thanks for ANY Help.
