another faulty phone?

Are you testing it or that's the way you use your phone?

Full brightness will drain the battery 5% for every 15 minutes screen alone, without anything else ON!

I have made that experiment here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660853

So, 2 hours 15 minutes, the screen will consume 9 x 5% = 45% (if you are using the default wallpaper, if more bright or life wallpaper, it will be more!).

And the heat will build up which I think will add more battery consumption (it will be way more than 45%!).

Then add WiFi and your browsing activities.

Probably you also have GPS and bluetooth ON ...

No wonder :)

Try to test it under NORMAL situation. Here is mine:
- Set brightness to 10% (my eyes is very happy with this)
- GPS off
- Bluetooth off

Battery consumption is about 10% (less) for 1 hour heavy usage (Wi-Fi ON all the time, gaming, browsing, etc.).

Hey all. I returned my previous HTC desire due to losing all its charge over night but now the replacement offers only 2 bour 15 minutes of WiFi browsing at full brightness and heats to 40 degrees after about 15 min of browsing.

Does this sound right?
Cheers
Gary

Hey there fella. I turned off background sync before hand, bluetooth was not on, just wifi and full screen brightness, browsing normal PC websites and writing this thread on my desire.

I wanted to make sure that 39-40 degrees for usage like that was not excessive, which i guess it is not. I will use the AndroidPowercontrol widget to reduce to 50 percent the screen power, any less i do not like as you can not see the awesomeness of the screen. What i notice however is that according to the battery monitor in settings, is that display is counting for virtually nothing of the power consumption, my phone has been turned on for 1 hour 30 minutes with a 40 minute standby, with the remaining 50 minutes was constant web browsing at full brightness, it claims the following for power usage out of 35 percent of battery used so far.

Android System - 40 percent (?, just web browsing with 3G Watchdog, Battery indicator and Internet running)
Cell standby 20 percent (very high?)
Display - 15 percent
Phone idle - 12 percent
Wi-fi - 8 percent
Internet - 5 percent

I am charging up to full again and will run a 30 minute test at half screen power at lunch time.

What I meant with % of battery is the "actual" battery life percentage.

100% = full charge.

You can get this actual percentage by using this app:
Battery Status - Cyrket

This is not widget, so you need to click it to see the % value.
But because of that, this does not drain your battery like other battery widgets.

Put it in the home screen, one click and you got the actual % left of your battery power.

Using the BatteryTime Lite app, from full says max is 2h55m wi-fi browsing. So normal.

Wi-fi and Bluetooth chips do get warm, due to their location on the broadcast spectrum (being micorwaves and all)

I assume new phone, but old battery? If not remember it'll take a few charges to get a decent charge hold.

Hey all, my phone works fine now. I can get about 4hr of constant wifi browsing and full brightness. The battery usually lasts most of my day with sync for everything, in 3g area.

John, send your phone back. Mine did the same after a few days, they think there was something wrong with the circuit in the phone. They replaced it straight away for me. My second and current phone, even with wifi and bluetooth that i sometimes leave on, and sync, loses only 15-20 percent max over that period of time.

Press phone and type in *#*#4636#*#*

Then click on Battery History. Under 'other usage' in the drop down menu, if the value for 'Running' is at or close to 100%, you're probably experiencing a known bug with the calendar app which prevents the phone from entering sleep mode.
