Help Do I need root to do these two things?

Hey guys. Just upgraded to the Evo V 4G from my old tried and true Optimus V. I rooted the Optimus V and was running CM9 on it and things were great but the phone was just showing it's age.

I've looked into rooting the Evo V 4G and it's a lot more complicated than with the OV. I really only want to do two things that I can't seem to find a way to do under the settings of the stock rom. These are the two things:

1. Control the LED notification for charging. I use a dock next to the bed and I really hate having the red/green LED light staring me in the face. I would like to have the LED always off regardless of the charging state.

2. WIFI Mobile Hot Spot. Is there an app out there that I can use to make my phone a mobile WIFI hot spot?

If these can only be accomplished via rooting, can someone point me to a nondestructive (data) method for rooting the EVO V 4G?

for the wifi hotspot thing u can try to use a app call wifi tether u might need to have been rooted to use it idk. u can use easy tether if u want to usb tether from phone to laptop. if u go to all things root section just follow the rooting guide stuff. rooting ist hard at all s-offing is where u have to pay attention but u didnt say u wanted to s-off

1. I would check the play store, most likely you will find what you need.

2. It depends, if you're paying for tether then you can use the built in hot spot. If you want to have free tethering g then yes you need root.

I played around with a couple of the LED notification apps in the play store but none of them were able to control it :(

nope i dont believe there is (somebody will correct me if im wrong) if you follow the instructions here http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/556788-complete-newbies-guide-rooting-flashing-evo-v-4g-roms-kernels-using-fastboot.html then just stop at step 6 your stuff shouldnt be deleted youll be rooted on stock rom. only when you are flashing new roms you have to wipe everything but you not flashing a new rom you just trying to get rooted

edit#1 I might be wrong about that you might have to flash a new rom in order to get rooted i went ahead and flashed jmz stock rom rooted so idk if being unlocked means you are rooted on the stock rom

It was this quote:

that was worrying me but I guess I was reading into it more than I should have.

Yes, basically it factory resets your phone. Nothing to worry about, you will just lose all data and return the phone to it's out of the box state. So you can backup things like contacts and text messages if you want to and you can even use mybackup to backup your apps, but it cannot backup the app data without root. So basically you can use it to easily restore all the apps you had back onto the phone but it will be as if they were just downloaded with none of the user data.

OUCH! Might sound superficial, but I've got some game progress that I'd hate to get wiped out. I read a lot of stuff about rooting the phone and came across a thread talking about a temporary root that would allow you to use titanium backup to get app data. Does anyone know if this works/still works?

I know what you mean. I have tons of games on my phone and it sucked biting the bullet and starting over but it was worth it in the long run...

I have heard of temp root but do not know if it's possible with this phone. I have not came across anyone that has done it. That's not to say it's impossible, I just have no idea where to look into that. I have not known anyone to do it.
