SIM free or contract

I'm currently waiting for the Desire to come out on O2, but am still not sure whether this is the best thing to do, or whether I should just get it SIM free and get an O2 Simplicity SIM (I want O2 because of the data allowance and because I know the coverage is good here, unlike other networks).

My issues are, if I get it on O2 will it be ruined by them, covered in O2 stuff inside and out. But, if I get it SIM free, will it be difficult to set up when I put the SIM in, for messaging/internet access/whatever. I'm not that techie minded so if it's complicated to set all this up on a SIM free phone I might struggle.

I'd appreciate hearing your advice/experience.

Thanks.

i brought it sim free from ebay, some chap who upgraded but wanted cash.

when i started up the phone it took me through the set up process, when it asks which access point to use etc, you just pick O2, i think it gets all the info from the sim itself, not sure- but its very simple, nothing techie about it

i prefer sim free to avoid all the operator rubbish and delays in firmware updates
