Alarm went off in "silent mode"

I had set the Hero to "silent mode" (by long-pressing the power-off button and selecting "silent mode"). A crossed-out quaver appeared in the notification bar to confirm that the phone was silenced. However an alarm has just gone off very audibly. What have I done wrong?

It works the same way on G1 ... Silent will not allow phone calls ... but does not prevent alarms...

And some notifications my come through as well ...

I know it doesn't make sense .. but ???

So how do I silence alarms? What is "Vibration mode"? Will putting the phone into Vibration Mode silence my alarms?

Reading page 51 of the manual, it seems that "Silent Mode" is one step above "Vibration Mode" on the Ringer volume scale, so presumably is not actually silent! Can this really be true?

And can it really be true that something called Silent Mode doesn't actually make the phone silent, and what's more this has been known about since the G1 came out and nothing done about it?

If i dont want my many ( 7) standard alarms going off ...
I just go into Alarms and untick them ....

Vibrate will just replace your call ringtone with a vibrate ...

You might try the App Timeriffic to see if that works ... I use to use it ... but have not been using it lately ... so can say if it will override the alarms either ???

When I go into a concert hall or a meeting I want to be able to silence my phone in one step. I don't expect to have to turn all my alarms off. I don't expect to have to remember to turn off Ringer Volume and separately turn down Media Volume. When I see something called "Silent Mode" I expect it to do what it says! Surely this is a basic fault!

I don't want to have to acquire a separate App to do basic things like this.

POWER button .. (not joking)

Well if you go into setting and "Sound and Display" and read the info in the Silent Mode Checkbox area ... you will see it reads as: "all sounds except media and alarms are silenced"

So alarms and Mp3(music) will worked while still not letting you phone ring out !!

This was very confusing to me at first, too.

I like the app "Toggle Settings" since you can set up profiles with one click that adjusts screen brightness and volumes for all audio.

I have a widget call AudioManager Console that i can use to adjust levels for alarms, music, alerts, ringer, system, and voicecall ... but the poster says he does want to have to use another app ... to control ALL sound ...

SO the only thing other than using some app is to PwrOff the phone ...

Surely, "silent mode" should mean what it says. If HTC want to leave the thing as it is they should call it something different ... I don't know what, maybe something like "Ringer Off".

"Power off" is an obvious option (and I used it myself in a concert at the weekend), but it would be nice to have the option to go quickly into a truly silent mode and still have vibration notifications.

Thanks for the Apps suggestions, Joe Jack and Jim. I like the idea of separately controlling alarm and music volume. This might help to prevent deafness caused by listening to music through headphones when an alarm goes off!

My point is not to make the poster seem "unreasonable!"
but to point out that the phone is not at fault ...for him appling what he thinks Silent Mode means ... and if you read the info in setting you can clearly see that it doesnt turn all sounds off ... Hence alternative methods were suggested ....

I think and "ALL Sounds OFF" would be nice ... but alas that would require an app of some type .. or a new feature in a future build ... until then there are workarounds ....

Hold down call end button>select power off>press ok. This works for me.

Doubt that would be very effective ... it surely doesnt work for farts ... but the good thing is the phone doesnt have smell alerts for all those FART apps in the market ...

OK enough ...back to the OP original issue ...

He doesnt get all sounds turned off when using the "Silent Mode" (it doesn't say it will do all sound ... but he thinks it should)

He does fell he should have to use another app to kill ALL sounds...

And Phone OFF !! is probably not the answer he was wishing for ...

But there it is ... use another APP or the Pwr Button ..

Spot on. I use "alarm" only to wake me, and I sometimes forget to "unsilence" my phone, so it is vital that the alarm still sounds.

If I require a reminder during daylight, I use the calendar. That can then "notify" rather than "alarm" me.

So I guess I am very happy with the way Android works here and I certainly woulnd't want it changed without an option to retain the current working pattern which is brilliant, logical, and does exactly what it says.
