So we ( meaning I ) finally got her N4 up and running on the right T-Mobile plan. I really like her phone but I am wondering why Google would do what they did. Why no SD card slot? But most importantly why not use the same charger all other android devices use. This reminds me of something like Apple would do.

Google is moving away from local storage and is pushing hard to put everything up in the clouds, hence why all the Nexus Devices don't have SD slots anymore.

The Nexus 4 uses the standard micro USB charger, don't know why yours is different.

The Google Nexus uses a standard microUSB charger, same one that other Samsung, LG and Sony Android phones use.

I have 32 Gb internal on my Gnex with no expansion. Aside from storing Nandroid backups, I don't need a ton of space. 8 Gb on my N7 is another story.

Google origninally moved away from the the sd storage space on nexus devices when the released the Nexus S back in 2010. Their logic at the time was because of the way android handled it at the time, when connected to the computer, you could not access the sd from the computer and the device at the same time. When disconnecting from the computer, you could also run into issues where the device would not auto sync with the card again without a reboot. There where other reasons as well, but those are the ones that I remember. Since then, they've launched their cloud services in full and that probably only contributes to their reasoning.

Not all androids use the same charger. The Asus transformer tablets use a proprietary 30 pin connector in order to fully utilize the keyboard and touchpad. The keyboard plugs into the charger input on the tablet and then the keyboard has it's own charger input on the side.

I think what he is referring to it the charger voltage, if you look at most smart phone chargers they all say 5.1 volts .7A output. but the nexus says 5.0V 1.2A output.

Sorry, I meant all the Android phones. I thought I saw a post about them using a different size port. I tried mine but it wouldn't plug in but I didn't try to hard as I didn't want to screw up her new phone. My bad . As far as the SD card, all my music is on a SD card. Is there a way to get it into the cloud?

The Nexus 4 does have a standard Micro USB port. You will find that all current smartphones will because the European Union has standardized on Micro USB. (Except Apple, but they ship with an adapter to make then EU compliant). I regularly charge my phone with a Samsung charger as well as a cheapo Chinese dock.

The question I have is if a regular charger, ie other phone charger that has 5.1V .7A is going to be enough juice to charge the phone correctly.
will using less Amps but .1 more volts affect the battery life?
I know the computer usb port will not have 1.2A but I think we already know the computer charging will not charge the phone very well.

The missus just got an iP5 and she is terrible at keeping it fed. If I can find that dongle, I could at least charge it for her in the car ..

The PC USB can just about stop the battery from dropping while I'm listening to podcasts or transferring data and the car charger just about stops the battery from dropping if I'm using the GPS.

With my previous phones, the battery would charge up in both cases.

Absolutely - Google Music lets you store 20,000 songs for free in cloud storage. Just download the Music Manager and sync your music from wherever on your PC hard drive.

That's why this phone is working so well for me. I've had 32GB phones before and obviously music is what takes up the bulk of it. As it stands now, I'm only using about half of the 8GB that came with the phone on apps, photos etc.
