City That Never Sleeps!
So after the Samsung software update 3.0.31 build date Feb.14th 2013 I have noticed that texts now lag when backing out of the screen and the keyboard is open. I confirmed it with my brother in laws S3 which was not updated and did not have the issue until he fell asleep and the phone updated automatically which he did not want and now he has my issue also.

Also noticed missing icons on home screen on battery changes and reboots and lag in between switching back and fourth to different programs/screens. I confirmed the issues at a Sprint store the tech agreed.

Factory wipe fixed a few issues but the lagging text it did not and so far no missing icons on reboots.

Thanks for messing up my S3 Sprint and Samsung way to go on this update.

How is yours acting after this update? This is for Sprint only.

what are you guys talking about?

When people say firmware update on android, they mean software (however technically this is incorrect). Android is an operating system with a kernel. Firmware is embedded and not updated on the s3 (its embedded on the eMMC)

The 3.0.31 is a kernel version. I would not expect an update just to contain a kernel.

The important things to look at are the android version and the build number.

Android version is the code base from Google that samsung started with. The build number is samsungs versioning and is really the most relevant for new functions and fixes

We will try to use the right terms next time. Not all of us are on the smart side of this stuff like you. But thanks for helping us clear this up....

But just to be clear....
Firmware is software for hardware
and software would be OS update like the Android OS

I hope I got that Right

Firmware is embedded software. Like on your DVD player. An OS is something more.

However you will often see people call the android os as firmware. Although technically incorrect, it is acceptable. But all I mean is, there is no distinction between a firmware update and a software update on an android device :) they mean the same thing

Okay, I feel like nothing is working after my update. Here are a few of the issues I'm having.

When texting, if I click on the proper word suggestion I no longer get the punctuation options, but I get a "next word" suggestion. I cannot find where to turn this off in the Samsung keyboard.

The first letter of the first word is capitalized, but it will not capitalize "i" in the middle of a sentence.

If I start to type a word and then click on the proper suggestion, it appends the proper word to what I have already typed. So if I type "th" and then click "thanks" the end result is "ththanks." Sometimes it even deletes the entire text/email and just replaces it with "ththanks" which means I lose minutes of typing. So frustrating.

Random letters are being capitalized in the middle of a word.

Now all my texts look like I am an idiot incapable of typing, when in reality I am just an idiot incapable of figuring out how to fix these settings.

I can also no longer find my Samsung dictionary.

Stupid update.

Yes that's totally different to the international version (that 70% of the S3's are) and most of the other US versions too.

It seems what sprint has done is decided to "split" updates into:
Firmware - Samsung Builds that use a different google code base than the last update
software - Samsung Builds that use the same google code base as the last update

However, both actually update "firmware" because we're not using google android, we're using Samsung Touchwiz android. It's not possible to update the code base without updating the touchwiz build.

Trust Sprint to make things up ;)
