Thinking about a G1, some basic questions

I have been wanting to get an Android phone for a while! My initial idea was to get an HTC Hero, but I might as well wait, as I have a feeling they are going to have a GSM one for the US with 3G, which is something that although I wouldn't really mind not having, I can wait to have it.

Having said that, I looked into getting a G1. I love first of the Android. ;) Second, I like the touchscreen and keyboard aspect of it. I like the fact that it has wi-fi, I like it for a lot of things really. :D

Anyway, I was looking into getting it and can find the phone for $106 online and was thinking, "Hey! This is something I could afford!" I know it's certainly reasonable, but do they go for significantly lower than that? (Not trying to be cheap, but if I can save money I would love too! Then I could get a nicer microSD or something for the phone.)

Also, I am on AT&T US, with the G1 would AT&T force me into a data plan? I plan to turn off all data services on the phone, as I have wi-fi wherever I need it and could just use a computer most of the time anyway.

Lastly, G1, good, bad or what? Do you recommend it? What are some problems you have had with it? Are there somethings that would steer someone away from the G1?

Sorry for asking so much, but I just want to be informed! I love the community guys, you people are nice, great and informative, I wish all online communities were like here! :D

The proud owner of two G1s ... so that should say mountains ... I have one as Stock and one rooted ... I love both ... it is a flexible and functional phone ... physical keyboard ... with rooting and doing Apps2SD you make this phone perform and look like most of the other Android phones that followed....

Think you will be happy !
