Goin from stock to 2.1 wasn't as hard as I thought

Ok, SO....
I am sooooo excited and proud of my self......
As you all can tell from my massive post count, I haven't been here long...
In fact I've only had my Hero since mar 13.
I've never had a smartphone before and I'm VERY happy with my phone. Ever day I'm still finding new lil quirks and tweaks on it and I get all fuzzy about it again.

Now I've also been impatiently waiting for the 2.x update to roll out and got really excited about the leak. I thought to myself "hey, worth checking out" I had NOOOO idea what rooting was & had never really "hacked" anything. But I wanted those live wallpapers and speach to text and sadly I'm not quite a good enough salesman to afford the N1.

I wouldn't really trust someone I don't know to root & flash my phone, & I sure as hell don't trust any of the "ra-*****" I know to do it.That left me with a spooky descision.... try & do it my self and risk turning my baby into a pretty paper weight...
.
I spent 5 1/2 hours reading everything I could on rooting, flashing and mod'ing the hero on this & 3 other forums and I'm proud to announce, I did it!

It's all really thanks to ccapasso for his amazingly comprehensive guide to rooting (http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-sprint-hero/38911-guide-root-rom-faq-tutorial.html), and to flipz for the awesome work he (and others) did on the ROM (Download: Fresh Rom 2.0d | visual voicemail + a2sd + lwp Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero).
Granted I haven't been able to mess with it a whole lot (cuz I was up til 6 am stressing myself out over it) but the only "bug" i've found so far is that the live wallpapers don't seem to respond to me interacting with them. (kinda dissappointing, but I can live with that)The speech2text is working great in the built in text app, as well as Handcent. Also in the browser (not just google search but even log in fields) and of course Google Nav.
If I come across anything I'll post here (as well as let flipz know)

So, just thought I'd throw out there, if you're lookin for an easy way to root & upgrade to 2.1 those are the links to follow!!!!!

thanks for a feel good post and not a "I am done with my crappy Hero".

Girlfriend is having numerous issues with her crapp... er phone ;-) so I asked her not to do anything until I root it first and see if things improve.

Will be taking the plunge soon I think with thanks to this post and the links show.

If all goes well, mine will be up next

Cheers

*** hmm second thoughts, I should do mine first to make sure I don't brick hers instead..not good :)

I wish I was having the same luck. I was running a rooted Hero with Fresh 1.1+SetCpu+Modaco kernel with great results. Then I decided to "upgrade" to Fresh 2.0d and that's where the fun began. I downloaded the Sprint RUU and installed. I downloaded Fresh 2.0d. Since flashing back to stock I an having lots of issues with SD card recognition. Poor recognition by both HTC Sync and PDAnet. I cannot root my phone again now due to this issue.Although I can mount and unmount my SDcard, the rooters and running it manually will not write to the sdcard, they think it is mounted when it is not.

Why did you run the RUU?? All you needed to do was boot into recovery mode and then perform a wipe. Then you can flash the 2.1 ROM. Not sure why the RUU would have messed up your phone. I ran the RUU on my old phone that I was sending back to Sprint for a replacement and had zero issues with it, although I never tried to re-root it again. Hopefully someone on here can get you headed in the right direction.

I've been running Fresh 1.1 w/ gumbo and SetCpu for a little while now. Today at work I wiped and flashed Fresh 2.0d...VERY NICE!! I really like the automatic screen brightness and the overall UI is so much nicer.

Thanks, I see my error now in not just wiping and flashing. Misread some of the info out there.

Will try this method on my wifes Hero running Fresh1.1+Gumbo kernel+SetCPU tonight.

I really believe my phone has an internal issue due to the fact that I can mount and unmount the sd at will, yet not even pre-kitchen will root the phone.

Pre-K gives the error: error writing to sdcard, cannot find device" 3 times.
Also, when I try to root the phone with pre-K, I lose all connectivity with HTCSync and PDANet until i reboot both devices.

I wonder if the leaked RUU has some sort of ant-rooting fix? LOL

I got LWP's working. If that's something ur wanting, boot in Recovery and flash Fix: Another Rosie + LWP Patch (OpenGL) (+Undo) Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero to allow those LWP's. (seeds of life is friggin awesome!)
