International HTC One X on Straight Talk?

Hey all...I wasn't sure if I should post this in the HTC One X forum or the Straight Talk forum.

Anyway, I have the international version of the HTC One X, purchased in Germany from Amazon.de: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B007CYAA16/

I'm going to spend 3-4 months in the U.S. starting this spring, and am trying to figure out what the proper carrier would be for the best service. I'll be traveling all across the U.S., so I'm concerned about nationwide service and not the speeds in one particular city.

From what I read on the HTC One X forum - http://androidforums.com/htc-one-x-...onal-cell-phone-will-not-work-in-america.html - the best carrier to use for this version of the phone is ATT due to compatibility issues. I prefer something strictly prepaid/MVNO and have no desire to use an actual carrier. I had enough of that B.S., being the vast majority of time during my adult life was spent on U.S. carrier contracts.

I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations, and if my unlocked international version will work properly with Straight Talk.

Yes. That phone supports GSM, so it should work fine with an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM through any number of MVNOs, including Straight Talk.

Look online for any company offering "bring your own phone".

Thanks, but it's unfortunately not that simple. At least, via what I'm reading anyway. That other thread I linked says I can only get 2G speeds with T-Mobile, so that's a no-go if that's really the case. All the bands and what they use and all that fun stuff.

As I understand, the international version of the One X supports 850, 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz for UTMS/HSPA/HSPA+.

And T-Mobile runs their UTMS/HSPA/HSPA+ stuff on 1700/2100 MHz... (850/1900 MHz roaming agreements with AT&T).

So, seems to me that it should work.

But hey... I don't have the phone, so I could be completely wrong!

Let me try and figure out the exact bands that the One X INTL uses and what TMo and ATT use here. I'll edit this post with my best guess findings!


Alright, looking at two quick sources for the bands that your phone has and AT&T's 3G/HSPA+ networks, I believe that you will be good. Here is why I choose this conclusion.

According to AndroidPolice AT&T uses bands: 850/1900MHz for 3G and HSPA+, depending where you are in the country.

According to Wikipedia the International One X has compatability for these bands.

Looks like you are good!

Just make sure that you choose the AT&T SIM from StraightTalk!!!

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I've been traveling quite a bit and haven't been back since my last post.

Now that AT&T has cut off Straight Talk, I guess that's a no-go for me. I'm still confused as to whether or not T-Mobile will work with my version of the One X. Such a headache.

You might still be able to get an ATT sim for ST from either ebay or walmart.com. They are correct in your phone will only get 2G on T-Mobile unless you're in a 1900 refarmed area then you will get access to HSPA+.

You could get an AT&T Net10 SIM on eBay for a couple of bucks. You may also want to check out one of the other AT&T MVNOs like Red Pocket, H2O, or Airvoice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I never really considered these "lower-tier" MVNOs (for lack of a better term). I'm going to have to read more about user experience on them. I don't want to get involved in something that's a pain to use. I looked at the terms & conditions on Net10 but they don't really explain very well what the "unlimited data" is. This phrase caught me as strange, though: "Internet browsing through the NET10 Mobile Web Portal."

What a pain. It has me considering just getting a new phone that will work properly on both ATT and Tmo.

Net10 is the same parent company as Straight Talk. The unlimited is marketing bs with all of the MVNOs. Net10 will cut you off at 1.5GB a month on the AT&T sim, not sure about the others. Most MVNOs have lousy customer service, that's the price you pay for cheaper rates. Good luck.

Ah yeah, I forgot they were both TracFone. Too bad AT&T cut off Straight Talk...how aggravating.

AT&T's non-contract plans are a rip-off, so that's why I was looking forward to ST. I'll only be in the US for several months and there's no point in getting a contract (I wouldn't want one anyway).

Net10 might work. Otherwise I'm not too against getting a new phone if I can figure out top-tier phone will work on both AT&T and Tmo.

Thanks for the pointer. I signed up for notification re the HTC One on Tmo. I get crazy confused when it comes to HSPA bands and all that, so I really have no clue if a non-HTC One phone will be compatible there. I'm still in Germany for the next couple weeks and could theoretically pick one up as they are coming out here before I leave, but the price will no doubt be quite a bit higher.

I can always test my One X on Net10, H2O or Red Pocket, but the pricing isn't all that great. I'm willing to give it a shot for a month, though, to see if it's any good.

I thought about that as well, but I'm underwhelmed by the camera from everything I've read about it and that's about the only thing keeping me from buying it. I take a ton of photos with my One X.
