hi,
i'm new to android, and i just got my htc hero, how do you close applications. i mean, i open an app and when i'm finished with the app then click the "back" button or the "home button" to open another app, but seems when i long-press the "home" button, previous apps are still open... the only thing that sort of close all the apps when i turn off & on the phone...

how do you close apps ? thanks.

Hi sonisoe,

some apps have the option to close it (when pressing menu), others don't. I'd suggest you to obtain a task killer app on the market (Advanced Taskiller or Taskiller).
When you long press the Home button, it doesn't show you apps that are still open, it's a Recently Used Apps window.
To know which apps are running without any 3rd party app, you need to go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage (click menu button) -> Filter (running).
As you can see, it's going to be much faster if you download a task killer app.
Hope this helps

Just remember that pressing Home is almost always going to leave the current running app in the background ...

Continually pressing the back key to stop most apps ... and close them ... and like previously posted ... some apps provide a feature while running to press MENU and then and option to Exit ...

Why is this functionality not a basic inclusion? Are the apps supposed to turn off automatically? I found my phone very slow tonight whilst on Facebook. I check the running apps and found loads of things still open, stuff which I'm not sure about closing or not. If I end the wrong app I might crash my phone or something

I'll be sure to back out of apps, but this seems like quite a major flaw?

Just download Taskiller. The free version works well enough. I haven't found that the back button closes any apps so find it very useful.
I have downloaded this and would like to know can I kill all tasks running that I am not using as I was surprised to see how much was running? If I then want to use a program I start it manually? What happens with things like mail and email if I kill those? I see though that ones in white are not using any memory, its only the yellow which need sorting. Thanks.
