hey,

about a month ago i found an eris. i tried to contact the owner but to no avail.

today i said screw it, and decided to just keep it and use it for myself.
i added some music, browsed the web and overall just try to familiarize myself with the phone.

the issues i've come across:

-won't let me sign into gmail
-won't allow me to enter the market

I got to thinking about a factory reset but was concerned with being able to use the wifi and such post reset.

What are my options to still use the device without having to sign a contract with vzw.
Leave it the way it is? can i upgrade to the leaked upgrade? can i root it? any other options?

(forgive the lack of knowledge. Any and all info is greatly appreciated)

So I would assume that if somebody has lost their phone, they call VZ to report it. Prepaid finds it and a month later calls VZ to activate. I would think they won't activate a phone that's been reported lost or stolen, right?

correct. but its worth a shot. that person might have not known to report it lost, so prepaid would have a free eris.

Go do the right thing and turn the phone in to verizon. If it is reported as stolen, you can be charged with possession of stolen property. That could mess up your probation status.

Ridiculous.

There's no legal obligation for a person that finds something to try to find the owner. Only a moral one.
Even if they suspected it was stolen, cops probably wouldn't waste their time on it.
