Help Help going from iOS to SGS4

The best place to go would be the S4 section of this forum.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - Android Forums

Specifically what kind of issues are you having?

ahh thanks! Basically on the iphone you can restrict settings and that, how can i do this on android? Also you know when someone texts me, how do i make it so that it doesnt show the full text, only who its from?

I don't know what "restrict settings" means precisely.

In android app settings are accessed from inside the app itself, rather than from inside the system settings app as on iOS (from my limited experience of iOS - apologies for any errors here!). I don't know this phone's message app, but I'd poke around in its settings to see if there is something in there.
If not, there are alternative SMS apps in the play store which do let you control what shows in the pop-up (or even whether there is one). So if the built in one doesn't do what you want, turn it's notifications/popup off (to avoid duplication) and try a different one. :)

Go into your Contacts app. Press the Menu button (left of the home key). Tap on <Accounts>. Tap on your Google account. Uncheck <Sync Contacts>.

Note that I have a Galaxy S3. I believe the S4 will work the same way.

When you first open your S4 box, it will have a small paper with a website that allows easy transfer of all your iPhone stuff.

I have the iPhone 5 and followed the directions and it synced my sms, contacts, music, pics, videos, notes, memos and more. The S4 is identical to my iPhone 5 now.

I am still debating on which I like better but when I show them to people side by side, 9 out 10 pick the S4.

I'm in the same boat. My iPhone 5 was a rock and battery life was great even if I used it heavily for me. This Gs4 is definitely more fun but I worry I will need to constantly be mindful of battery life, which I never ever had to pay attention with the iPhone. We will see, I guess.

It's all part of the swings and roundabouts between Android & Apple devices.
Where you found your iPhone gave a great battery life it was done so at the expense of Apple locking iOS that tight in order to not allow any App to interfere with the OS.
Locking the system down as iOS does takes away any personalisation like utility apps, widgets, file browser, Bluetooth file transfer, etc. etc.
Android on the other hand allows you the choice to be as free and easy with the OS as you like, at the expense of battery life.

The reason why you are unable to receive text messages from your friends who have iPhones is because you once had an iPhone that was attached to iMessage.

This issue has to do with Apple's implementation of the iMessage protocol. It binds device's and/or SIM card's unique ID to their servers (using the UUID from the device and the SIM ID) and doesn't release them easily.

So what happens is that Apple iMessage is taking over the text messages on your friend's iPhones and since you don't have an iPhone anymore, you can't receive iMessages anymore.

There is a potential fix for all of this...

  1. Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
  2. Log in if not already logged in.
  3. Click on ">" to the right of the phone listing
  4. Click "unregister"
If that doesn't work, get your SIM card swapped.

I'm going to post this here to keep it contained as I too am coming from an iPhone 4 to a SG4. I do have somewhat limited experience with Android, but that's due to my work phone being Android. This is the first phone I can take free reign with.

My questions:
1) What's the best method to manage and maintain your contacts? Can I sync them directly with Outlook?
2) I have one gmail account and two android phones. I have a feeling this is going to cause a problem if I sync contacts with the phones to GMail. Are there any ways to micromanage what phone does what with the gmail account?

Thanks!

Not disputing this at all, because it's definitely accurate info, but in my experience not receiving texts from iPhone users is because I've left my Macbook or iPad connected to the web. This then has the text go to the iOS device instead of reverting to standard SMS.

This happened to me last night. I left my laptop open and I had to have my gf email me her dinner order because her iPhone texts were going to my laptop. Makes her even happier that I've gotten yet another phone.

Wow, I just purchased my S 4 today, coming from Iphone 4s. I can send text messages, but cannot receive text messages from other Iphones. Android text are fine, but do not receive text from Iphones. This will be a deal breaker for me...Most of my clients are IOS...dang it....arrgg

I believe you have to go into settings on your iphone ( connected to the net ) and turn off I message...

You can use the same Gmail account contacts with multiple devices with no problems, I have 2 accessing my same account. Any changes effect all 3.

Do the full sync like I posted about above and your S4 will mirror you I4.

Will gmail somehow let me keep my personal and work contacts separate? Dont want personal going to work phone and vice versa.

Thanks!

I would also recommend YouTube as a great resource for tips, tricks, and troubleshooting! There probably aren't that many vids on the GS4 yet, but give it a week and there will be plenty!

Thanks, did take a look at youtube, with limited help there :D

I second YouTube...the GS3 was my first Android phone...took me about a week of messing with it and watching tips and tricks on YouTube to fully understand the phone

Yeah, ive kinda played around with it so i am kinda better with it

There's a pretty good primer thread for newcomers to Android in the Android Lounge forum.

http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/490778-please-read-me-first-android-things-know.html

Asking questions is, of course, also welcomed. Don't be shy - even the most experienced members here will have been in the same position at one time. :)

thanks ill take a look

There was no paper in there with a website on? Whats the website?

I was able to test drive a G 3 in my environment. I clicked on the wireless settings and added the SSID and the key. I then held the wifi entry and was able to get advanced settings.
Password: blank we don't need one.
Proxy settings: set to manual
Proxy host name: I put in my proxy.pac address
Port: blank
Bypass proxy for: blank
IP: DHCP

The "save" button would not allow me to save. Even if i populated every field.
