Help Samsung Galaxy Note 2 - Dead (Not powering on)

Hi there,

My dad owns a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and two nights ago, he put it on charge before he went to bed and woke up at 4 am and found the phone to be completely dead. The phone will not do anything, the LED doesn't even blink when the power button is pressed. The battery has been removed and placed back and still no differences. It is strange how it works one day and then doesn't work the next day. I was reading a similar thread on this forum to see if anyone had come up with a solution about this as it needs desperately needs to be fixed because of the data and contacts still remain on the phone.

I was also reading another forum and someone stated that Samsung said that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 die out after 90 - 150 days and the phone is just three months old. I don't know if this fact is true or not.

It would be really appreciated if anyone could help with this problem and I don't know whether if a new battery would help but a new battery has been ordered so should either arrive tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

Kind regards,

Sean

Testing with a new battery would be a start, stop in a TM Store and have them check the battery, if it is the battery the phone should still be under warranty and they should replace the battery. Other then that I am not sure what else it could be, but the store tech should be able to diagnose it once you bring it in. let us know what happens, I am sure others will chime in.

Thank you for you quick response. Just waiting for the battery to arrive and test if the old battery has been fried or not. What would the next step be if the new battery doesn't work ? Any suggestions what I can do about this ? We have tried multiple USB cables and chargers and nothing, the phone is completely dead.

If it is not the battery, I would take it in the a TM store and have them look at it.

The replacement battery arrived this morning and didn't work. I got an LED bulb with wires and connected it to the original battery and it still has juice in the battery so looks like it is the phone.

Phoned Samsung customer support and they said that they would arrange for a courier to come and collect the phone this Thursday and keep it for 7 - 10 days but the data can't be recovered. I think the motherboard has been fried but there is no burning smell coming from the phone itself so I don't know.

I had the same issue about a month ago. . Same circumstances too. . Plugged it in one night. . And in the morning was dead. ...

Except my Led was flashing.. That was the only sign of life though. . Ended up as being a motherboard Replacement..

(Touch wood).. No issues since...

Why not take it back to the carrier, sending it back to Samsung, you are out of a phone for 7 to 10 days now ??

Well it was 4am in the morning and the phone was just dead, no red LED flashing or nothing. Well the data can not be backed up so all contacts and media is gone.

If he had he's contacts sync with his gmail he should have any problems with his contacts and his media should be on his sd card. Once he gets a new device and he signs in his gmail all his contacts would sync to his new device.

Well, more bad news from the note 2 front. Mine did exactly the same thing. Working one minute, the next completely dead. Will do nothing. Checked the battery, good, and for grins replaced it with a friends battery to no avail. I did notice the prior couple weeks seemed to be rebooting on its own. Unfortunate, as I was really banging my prior Iphones as to how much cooler the Samsung is. However, I never experienced one problem with my 'other' phones. Since a phone should first off be a phone, this is priority. Yes, I had my contacts backed up, had an external 32gig card in it for storage, so thankfully have most of my music, etc. But again, not much use for making calls now, is it.

Well, I guess that the motherboard issue is not isolated to GS3 afterall.... :( Well, hopefully, my phone was made after Samsung corrected the firmware issue related to motherboard failure.

I once found a post on xda that gave chip and firmware numbers of some affected parts in the Note 2. I tried finding this again but couldn't.

If you can find these numbers anywhere (xda or maybe Google) you can download 'emmc check' from the play store to see if your phone has the affected parts.

Hope this helps. Woke up one morning to a dead phone. Ended up taking the battery out, the sim card and the memory card. Then per suggestion on another forum, put JUST the battery in. Plugged into wall charger and within 2 minutes had animated charging battery. Let it charge for couple hours. Shut it down and reinstalled the sim card and memory card. Plugged it back in and it fully charged and has been fine since. Good luck.

@fit Did you take it in to your carrier?

Well, that would be ideal. Unfortunately for those of us who travel abroad for long stretches of time this is not possible. I am in Australia and will be here for another month. Of course my warranty will run out. I will buy another phone, but the most difficult thing is the loss of communication link with home. Sure there are computers, skype, all that stuff. But not like having your phone. It becomes such a personalized device.

I have tried everything I could think of. I am trying this now, sure I have but at this point anything is worth the try. It is disconcerting to say the least, traveling being away from home extended periods of time, we rely so heavily these days on our phones. Though I had much backed up to my storage card, this does not make up for the loss of touch with home. Also many of us are now creatures of being tied to our phones, probably very few to noone memorizes addresses, phone numbers of new acquaintences, (or at least ones we don't visit much but need to periodically), notes to yourself you may have made that are no longer there, etc. Noone expects a basically brand new phone to crap out. Many thanks for your input, and I will certainly post any 'results'.

At the risk of 'whining' here, (by the way I am), I definitely have to change my rating of this phone to a 1 star. In fact a do not consider buying. I will certainly get another phone, but I think it is safe to say I will shy away from Samsung. Having been in the electronic/computer business myself for many years, quality is paramount. Any phone that craps out within a couple months is far from quality. (apparantely I am far from the first one this has happened to). I travel the world in my occupation, certainly have quite a few colleagues. I will do my best to any of them who will listen to convey not to make the same mistake, take a look at other phones.

Humm.. not sure I agree with the above. I have had so many electronics just die. From a nokia to iphone from an macbook to dell even my bosch diswasher. It's how the warranty is dealt with that I am concerned with.

So far I have had a note 2 die within 6 months but I am on note number 2 and I will see how this lasts. If this to dies then I will be inclined to agree with you..

But millions of these have been sold with very few issues.

Well, I agree with you a bit in your principal statement. We could all talk about bad devices Many devices (there are lemons in every line of product) give us fits, however I believe if we get one of these tendancy would be to shy away or at least look at other products. I would venture to guess reliability is pretty high on everyones list, after they get past all the bells and whistles offered.

You are definitely right, millions have been sold with very few issues. On the other hand you usually don't know about the 'issues' others have until you have it and seek help, then the 'issues' come to a bigger light. I don't care what anyone says, no brand new phone should peter out in a month or two. I may well buy another Samsung, but it should be said I am doing many comparisons with other manufacturers at this point.
