Help Note 2 charging problem

Hi All,

My Note 2 is probably 2 month old. I have been using the wall charger that came with the phone, it would take around 2-3 hours to go from 30% to 100%, very quick in my opinion. It gets a bit warm on the back of the phone, I assume that's because of the rapid charging.

Last couple of days I have experience slow charge using the wall charger. It took the 8 hours to charge from 15% to 80% last night. This is very strange. I wonder what is going on. How do I identify the problem?

My phone is two months old and I'm having the identical same problem!! It charged for over 8 hours one night and only got to 88% I have noticed when I plug in the charger sometimes I don't hear the beep sound right away so now I make sure I hear it or I reinsert the plug. I am hoping the female end of the phone is not going bad like it did in older phones in years past. In those circumstances I had to get a dock to sit the phone on to charge it. :(

faster charging creates heat that shortens battery life. I like fast charging during the day time and slower at night. I keep the phone on ac whenever possible to minimize discharges because that also shortens battery life.

I had the same problem after having the phone a little over a week. Took it to the AT&T store and they said the charging port on the phone is corroded. They pretty much accused me of water damaging the phone and said they would not do anything to fix the issue (repair, replace, or refund). After arguing for days with corporate and the managers at the store I was finally able to get the phone replaced. I had to prove that the white piece of paper underneath the backing of the phone by the battery was white instead of red or pink (red or pink means water damage, white means no water damage). I also proved other people were having the same exact issue on different forums until they finally caved in and gave me a brand new phone. Had the new phone for about 2 months now without any issues.

I don't want to get into a "I've not had this, you must be wrong" vs "I have so you must be" by posting this. Especially since I am from the Uk and not, as is evident from context of other posts the US but rather would like to add my experience as evidence against carriers trying to fleece people.

I generally charge my phone straight from a mains charger and it does warm the back slightly. This should be well within battery tollerance. I have a gel case over my phone which means I may not feel the full heat but also means that it keeps the heat inside which would elevate the battery temperature.

I have not noticed any decline in charging times and little change in battery drain while using (the latter being hard to quantify due to changes in usage profile).

I will say that my phone has become somewhat damp on occasion. I live in Scotland where there is a regular and often large amount of sky water happening at any one time, some of it nearing the horizontal. My bluetooth unit has cut out many a time, requiring rest and relaxation on a double folded towel above a radiator (double folded so as not to overheat the battery - BT unit batteries don't have the heat tolerance of phone ones).

Check the temperature of the charging unit plugged into the wall. That should generate no heat, even when connected to a phone.

As an additional I have used the supplied mains charger, an older Nokia charger, USB over various computers and a Skross multi adapter.

Bwaat? Nearly every AC/DC wall charger is gonna emmit some heat due to the conversion at least in the USA because we have 60hz 120v AC vs your british 240v 50hertz standard

I hang my head in shame for not knowing that. I assumed that power conversion would be about on a par in that 5-10 year old phone chargers ran hot as a badger's snatch on heat and that modern ones didn't based on improvements in component efficiency.

I don't remember much from my electronics courses at school but the frequency should be irrelevant. I would have thought though that converting 240v to 5v would generate more heat than converting 120v to 5v. The VRC triangle would indicate that your mains runs at twice the current, all other things being equal though and maybe there lies the bind.

In the UK single purpose mobile charging plugs are little more than the plastic moulding to support the 3 pins and a ridge to unplug them which may contain some circuitry. They generate no noticeable heat and it takes scientific lab level equipment to measure the difference between power used and delivered.
Here's an average size, not the smallest and we are constrained by having large, 3 pin sockets.

The key factor is that with higher voltage, you don't need to run as high of a current to get the same wattage of work done on the other end of whatever is being fed the power.

Because of our lower voltage AC spec, when we convert it to DC, it requires a higher amp draw and depending on the resistance of the internal components of the adapter which is usually pretty crappy for more DC appliances for cost cutting measures, thus the resistance is pretty high causing a higher heat output and also poor efficency.

My Note II is approximately 4 months old and until the last couple of days charging has been fine.

However it is now an absolute joke.

I fully charged the phone when i first got it and since then have always run it down until prompted to charge normally at 15% battery left. Charging has only ever taken a couple of hours but now its taking forever.

I ran my battery down to 0% today and have then put it on charge at 9.30 this morning, it is now more than 6.5 hours later and it is still not charged to the point where the light turns green.

I have only ever used the cable and the charger provided and have never got the phone wet or anything of that nature. I have emailed Samsung to see what they say but thought id see what others on various forums think of this issue.

For the record i am on android 4.1.2 if thats an issue.

I'm in the same boat. Did you ever figure out what the problem was? Because this is quite annoying. My Note II literally takes 12 hours to get to 51%.

Fore everybody who is having a problem, are you all using original Samsung 2A wall charger with original Samsung usb/micro-usb cable? Have you tried using another wall charger? A different cable? Try charging it to another AC outlet? Charge it from the car charger? If it consistently performs the same in every setup - it's your phone.

Otherwise, you have too many variable in this equation. Something could go wrong with either original wall charger or the cable. Your micro-usb tip might be loose, not making a good contact. Something is wrong with AC outlet. You are using another wall charger which is <1A (thus at least half of the 2A speed or even slower). You are using cheap computer usb cable with thin wires designed for a typical 500mA usb port. You are using Otterbox case with micro-usb port cover that pushes on the cable when plugged in (could bend the cable connector or even indirectly your phone micro-usb port). Or maybe you just switched to another cable that has a wider connector and the micro-usb part doesn't go all the way into the phone (interfering with your case). Too many things to list, but hopefully it will give you some ideas where to troubleshoot.

Thanks for that information. I just realized that all of the replacement chargers that I've been using after my OEM charger broke are 1A and even as low as .75A (which didn't even work). I ordered a new charger online and will test. I was able to test with a 2A charger for a few minutes and the phone seemed to be charging faster than previously. I hope that was it!

I too had the same charging problem on my Galaxy note 2. It took me than 8 hours to charge but never got a full charge.I tried different chargers but no use so I got back to my Samsung charger. Then I downloaded an app called Galaxy charging on Google play it showed me how much power I was getting when charging my phone and the power that I was getting was not the same everytime.

So I replace my USB and I was successful. IT seems that the USB was defect. After changing my Usb I was getting 1200 on the app and till today I have no problem in charging my phone Hope this helped you

buy any new "usb connector " and insert into your charger.....u will get output ...nearly 1800....which will be too fast beyond your expectation...(2x faster) with 2A charger.
