Yep, latitude/maps is a killer with automatic check-ins on the S3 and it is for me on the S4 as well. I thought I would give it a go to see if things had changed but it has not and I don't get much of anything out of it. Google now, same. I get little out of it and often find it intrusive and annoying while it uses enough extra battery to show a difference at the end of the day. Course if you are getting something useful out these things you'll want to keep it or them but a good general rule is if you don't use it, lose it. Also make sure your various data pullers like weather widgets and the like are not refreshing any faster than you want them to.
For comparison my device idle is 3%, cell standby 5%, android system 7% and 36 minutes of calls clock in at 11%. Largest single user is as expected screen at 47%.
The previous fellow is spot on, a number of people have posted up over on xda about the automatic check in killing batt so that would be my first stop.
