Review of ZeroLemon 9300 mAh extended battery for Note 2 w/pics!!!

From day one when I got ZeroLemon 9300 mAh battery, the question of external charger for this battery was on my mind. You get a monster capacity, but it will also take at least 3x as long to charge it up and you can only do that inside of your phone. It's OK if you run out of lemon juice and put your Note 2 on a charger overnight, but otherwise you better have a spare fully charged battery. Plus, for some of us the use of ZL battery will be not daily thing. Bottom line, external charger is a must have. I have talked to ZL support and they confirmed about looking into rapid external charger, but no details about it available yet. So I figured to try something out myself.

The challenge is that ZL battery looks like a stock footprint on top of a large plate. Most of the regular single battery charges have small footprint where they could mate with battery contacts but ZL will be top-heavy pulling out of the charger. I came across this cradle charger from Tmart.com, it's about $15 and as a bonus you can charge the battery and sync your phone. Got it from here: Twin USB Cradle with 2nd Battery Slot for Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100 - Tmart.com - they actually have it in their US warehouse so it arrived very fast. As a cradle it's OK, although just like any vertical cradle-stand it can accept only a slim case or Note 2 without a case. Also, for some reason with an included ac-adapter you can't charge at more than 500 mA (it was forcing it into USB charging mode). But that wasn't my main purpose.

In order to fit ZeroLemon, I had to modify this case where the back support of the cradle/stand had to be leveled off. Since I use dremel for my mods, I actually included a picture below for those who are interested. Using a cutting wheel to slice it off, and griding wheel to smooth out the rough edges. Turned out to be very functional! Because of the wide base of the charger/cradle, there is no wobbling or worrying the battery will pop out of the charger. The only drawback is that charging led light is covered by the battery, but if you look sideways you can actually see it: red - charging, blue - all done (I assume triggered by a target voltage when battery is fully charged). I took my depleted ZL (it was down to 3%) and set it on the charger overnight from midnight until 7:30am. I did use an included AC wall charger since I figured it said 1500 mA so it should charge it fast. In the morning popped the battery into the phone and to my surprise found it to be only at 32%. That would mean that wall charger was actually providing about 415 mA instead of 1500 mA. No surprise since you can never trust these labels. It could have been a typical 500 mA charger with some efficiency loss down to 415 mA of actual current. I decided to use my other "trusted" 2A wall charger. Kept it charging in the same setup from 10am till 1:50pm, popped it into the phone and battery went from 32% to 97% in under 4 hours!!! Which is approximately 1550 mA of supply from a wall charger, with some efficiency loss from original value. So if I would have used this wall charger from 3%, most likely I would have gotten to a full 100% charge in under 7 hours, maybe even 6 1/2 hours.

Pretty much charging circuit of that cradle/charge is able to handle high current input and can charge Zerolemon at relatively fast rate of 1500 mA supply. Plus, even after slicing a layer of back support of that cradle, I was still able to plug in the phone and charge/sync it (although through that micro-usb connector it was charging at USB rate, not AC).

Bottom line, it worked! Oh, and as a disclaimer I have to mention that I'm not responsible for any damage to your battery or your fingers if you decide to duplicate it ;) Here are the pictures:

This battery is off the wall. Just got it on Monday, took it off the charger Tuesday around 7AM. I have not plugged it in since, and with medium usage (voice and data), it is at 37% as of Friday noon. Feels very solid. While you can pull the edges away from the phone, they do not do so on their own, and have some tackiness to them. The cover allows for an excellent grip.

Im using zero lemon 9300mAh battery. When I remove the battery (havnt tried simply restarting), replace, and turn the phone back it jumps up about 7 to 10%. Any idea why? Or a way to fix?

Also I used my phone for light texting and like 2 phone calls over a 12 hour period and my phone stayed at 14% the entire time. When i got home, and a couple minutes of use, it dropped like 3 to 4%. How can It stay at 1 percentage point for 12 hours then do that?

Thanks for any info

@Twist .... Is there still no external battery charger available for purchase that doesn't require a dremel?

Nothing I have found so far. Even the one from my mod, it works but after a while contacts starting to get loose (not the best quality :(). ZL guys told me they are working on a fast charger, so they are aware of high demand for it. In theory, there are a lot of wall chargers that accept ZL battery because the base of it is a regular battery footprint. I'm talking about those wall chargers where the whole OEM battery fits in, not the one where half of the battery sticking out (those need a regular battery to be flipped on its back which is not possible with ZL batt). In theory those wall charges can be used if you plug them into a horizontal power strip where it's not hanging vertically off the wall. But all these offer a painfully slow 350 mA charging where you need 2000 mA (2A) to take full advantage of fast charging.

I heard the wall charger which comes with Anker (pack of 2x 3100 mAh batteries with a charger) has 1000 mA which should be great, but I still need to confirm it.

Thanks Twist. Hopefully the Anker does work. When do you think you might get confirmation?

EDIT Just rec'd battery with white case. Came 60% charged. I'm sure I read it but must have forgotten but how long does it take to fully charge?

Already I don't like that I must use my phone to charge it. Ever since the original Evo I've been saying phones are getting to be heavier than this tiny micro charging port--too much weight on it and heaven forbid this falls while plugged in.

Gonna go look at Anker chargers now.

I think their instruction is for 12hr first change, but that's really when you are fully depleted. 9300 mAh with 2000 mA (stock) wall charger - that's close to 4.65h (simple math :)). I believe I kept it on for about 6 hours, even with it hit 100% I let it juice up for another 1 hour.

Sorry, didn't get confirmation from Anker yet.... Never mind, I just looked up on Amazon and was able to zoom into the back of the charger to see its 600mA for battery charging (while 1000 mA for USB port only). So that's 9300 / 600 = 15.5hr of charging :( ZL better hurry up with 2A wall charger!!!!

This battery would easily fit the Samsung charger if Samsung hadn't put the pins on the opposite side. The battery door on the charger comes off.

EDIT Maybe it's me but since using this battery today my abysmal 3G has increased ridiculously. I have to keep looking at the phone to see if it flipped to 4G or something.

I purchased mine based on this great review and absolutely love it. I'm on my second week with the battery and haven't had any issues yet.

I received it Saturday, April 27 and although it was at 60% charge I left it in the charger overnight. I went from Sunday morning to Friday afternoon and still had 10% charge.

Since I knew I would be heavily using the video and camera the next day, Saturday, May 4th, I put the screen brightness to full and let some movies play. I started them at 5 pm and the charge didn't get down to 3% until almost 11pm, 6 hours later!

It was fully charged the next morning and I used the phone almost continuously for almost three hours the next morning with the screen brightness at full. The charge was still at 83%. That was Saturday and right now I still have 26% charge with 4 days and 3 hours on it.

Thanks for all your great reviews twister6!

@twister. Was that 20 hours at max brightness from full charge and just left the it on until it died? Im assuming it was because of the stress test? I ask because I use around 75% brightness and I usually get around 11 or 12 hours of screen time on and like 3 to 3.5 days on 1 charge.

My hyperion 6200 battery was getting 11 hours of screen time on at like 40% brightness and 2 to 2 5 days of use. It just doesnt seem like im getting as much out of zero lemon as I should (or at least what youre getting). It still an unstoppable battery and have no complaints.

Ill post some screen shots of my hyperion battery life and my zero lemon for comparison for any one who cares too.

I made an imgur album because the resolution wantworking when I tried to upload screenshots top this page

Is anyone experiencing reception issues while using this battery?

Now that the white case is in stock I was about to jump all over it and order today. However, I just read on a few sites that people are noticing that these batteries are hampering the data/cell/wi-fi reception on their phones to varying degrees. This has given me pause, so I wanted to see if anyone here was experiencing this problem. Thanks.
