I know many of you are getting ready to make the jump from BB to the Incredible. I just had to have a way to back up my contacts.

TO ALL Storm users (and other users with 5.0, not sure if it works with 4.7.. should be able, havent tested it) you CAN backup your phone via backup assistant from Verizon. I did this yesterday and now have all of my contacts backed up on my account.

While the Tour and Storm 2 had the program pushed to their devices, I (and others) were still able to grab the link!

Simply download and install the backup assistant from the tour link.

http://mobile.vzw.com/download/BUA/BB9630/syncclient_ba_bb9000.jad

or try the Storm2 link if that one doesn't work (it should)

http://mobile.vzw.com/download/BUA/BB9550/syncclient_ba_bb9550.jad

BOTH worked for me on my storm. they should work for you too.

** TO RESTORE on your new Droid Incredible**

When logged in to verizonwireless.com, you can simply select all contacts then export them as a .csv file.

After you do that, login to your gmail account (you have to have one to use an android device anyway) and you can import your contacts.

A more detailed rundown is here

How to Transfer contacts from your phone to your Android device

This is for the original droid, but will work fine! Just skip the top part about backup assistant

OR USE GOOGLE SYNC

ddoligalski: (thanks)

Just download Google Sync to your BB and let it sync your phone to your Gmail account. It can sync your contacts, calendar, and/or gmail.

See Google Sync for your phone.

Works great!

Ah, should have included that. You can simply select all contacts the export as a .csv file.

I prefer to export my contacts list to Excel and manipulate them there. Here is an older guide on how to do it. Note that it's a few years old so it's not using DM5.0 but it works the same way with the latest software, the screenshots just look a little different.

They have Excel templates you can use to do your contacts. But if they're already in .csv's, just import them and pretty them up.

You can also just export your contacts from Gmail then change them around that way. Just re-import them once you have them updated.

I have to agree that Google Sync makes things so much easier. Imagine being able to sync without physically wiring your BB Storm to your computer, and in my case, seeing the bastard reset itself about 50% of the time.

Anyway...just a heads-up for those that are transitioning and using Google Sync - one thing that I noticed is that following a sync, some of the contact information can disappear from the Storm. From what I've noticed, it has something to do with the contact headings when there is more than one entry for certain information. For instance, my brother has two mobile devices (mobile 1 and mobile 2 in his contact profile on my Storm). Once I use Google Sync, one of his mobile numbers disappears from the Storm. It's not a huge concern, because in every case in which this has happened, the other mobile device is stored online in my Google profile, and I anticipate it will sync seemlessly once I receive my Incredible. However, if you have similar entries, it might be worthy of taking note to minimize any inconvenience over the next week.

Once word of advice before doing any syncing on either device...

Backup your contacts on the phone and in Gmail. That way if something goes awry you're not SOL. You can backup your BB contacts a number of ways. Easiest is probably using DM. For Google, just export your contacts as a .csv.

I just tried usign google sync.
It got my contacts but did not get the contact's pictures off the BB Storm1?

Also it did not get any calendar items as it said it was syncing with my one email address but I could not get it to use my other address that has all the calendar entries. In options I could only select NONE or the one email address. I could not add the other address that has the calendar items.

What am I missing?

I also downloaded backup assistant from verizon and it worked but also did not get any of the photos for the contacts? bummer.

That's exactly why I prefer to export Google contacts and BB contacts to csv and compile everything manually. Google Sync has been flaky (duplicate contacts and lost contacts) ever since it was released. Plus then I have a spreadsheet with all of my contacts in case I ever need a hard copy.

Yea, I've been saved more than once from a bad sync by having a backup .csv or PIMbkup of my contact info. Nothing scarier than thinking you've lost all your numbers :eek:
