Motorola Droid Maxx HD

I'm considering upgrading to a Galaxy 4 as one of our lines is eligible. The only downside from a Verizon standpoint is they would force us off of our grandfathered unlimited data to a 4 gb family. Reality is we only use .5gb - 1gb a month per device. We have 2 on the plan.

I'm a photo lover. Is the Galaxy 4 camera that much better than the Maxx HD to make the move worth it?

That is the one thing about the Maxx HD I have that could be better. Even after the update I believe it still lacks a little in low light.

It sounds like the data change is a non-issue, seeing how you do not use that much data to begin with.

Although I have not had any experience with the camera, I have heard that is is quite good, including in all around performance. However, I have also heard that the HTC One is the best camera you can get for low light performance, although it can have some issues with performance in other situations, and only takes photos at 4MP. Hopefully someone with experience with the S4 camera can chime in to help you out.

Its worlds better IMO, I had the RAZR HD which is the same as the Maxx as far as camera, and the pictures are a lot less grainy, the 13MP makes it easier to see more when you crop or zoom in, All of the little filters and gimmicks are pretty neat too. Just more options, plus a better lens

I figured it would be. I'm looking to get close to the run time on battery life on my maxx hd and the S4 is the only device on Verizon that gets close to doing that with a better camera.

I had both the original Maxx, and Razr HD which is the same as the Maxx HD but with a smaller battery. The Macro on the Maxx was amazing and low light pictures were good. The RAZR HD was not very good at macro and in most ways was a step down for the camera.

I have the S4 now and the camera is better in all respects. Great macro, good in low light, and superior brightness and clarity. Sure there are some neat tricks and I have yet to use most of them.

I vote for the S4.

If you want to keep your unlimited data, there are ways of doing it. Check out this thread on the board for tips on how to do it.

I just upgraded from the razr maxx and I'm loving it. The camera is so far ahead of what Motorola offers, and I've heard that it's beating out the camera on the iPhone. The battery life on the s4 is not as good as the maxx, but there is so many new features on the s4 tugging at the battery for attention. I'm learning what tweaks I can make to the phone to improve battery life and I'm sure that Samsung will offer future firmware upgrades that will help as well.

This is one of the best purchase decisions that I've made in a long time...

As far as camera goes, the galaxy s4 takes the best picture overall hands down. HTC One take better picture in really low light but how many pictures do you take in the dark anyway? That's what a flash is for. And with night mode on the s4 isn't bad at night. Own both phones. I honestly think the camera on the HTC one is hype. It's not bad at all but not nearly as good as what people make it out to be. To much light gets in the photo if you ask me. You don't have the same detail. It's just simply a marketing term they tried to sale. I think HTC was better off going with a 13mp camera. The s4 has better features when it comes to the camera as well. You see the quality in them all. It's just fun.

In general, most flashes just wash out faces, create red eye, and cause the photo to darken because it adjusts to it. I took photography and I know the flashes are meant to fill in for shadows and not much else except on SLR cameras that are added on. Really, pixels are less important than lens and sensor quality but it's best to have all three.

Camera is great so far; a decent point and shoot with lots of settings.

For unlimited data, you can keep it if you pay full price for the phone or buy one online. I just flat out bought it. I'll make the money back in like 16 months. Had my DX for three years; I keep phones a long time. Plus, it's worth it to me to not have to worry.
