I have been searching around through different root procedures and roms but i dont come to a conclusion. What is the best root procedure out there if any and the best rom I can install on my sprint hero. Any tips and hints will be really appreciated since I am officially noob status. Thanks for the help guys.

Just my humble opinion, but with the 2.1 update coming soon, I would wait for it, update your Hero with it, then make a decision about your need to root your phone based on what features you work with most on your phone. If you just want to root to be rooting, then that is a different matter. Waiting also for a ROM based on the Sprint/HTC 2.1 rom image might provide more stability and features as well -- something else to think about.

Good luck whatever you decide. Cheers -- :D

I have gone back and forth on rooting and have decided to wait. Just about the time I think I'm ready, I'll see something I don't understand in the instructions, and loose my confidence. I'd be on this forum several times an hour, asking questions and making all of you nuts. So I'm going to wait.

Yes, I do wish Sprint would hurry up but I'll hang on a little bit longer.

it is your phone do what you feel comfortable to you..

Rooting is easier than you think..
ROMs are sooo much better than stock...
2.1ROMs are soo much better than 1.5...
to compare:
watching sex.. or HAVING sex!!! :D

also..
with the new 2.1 update.. it might lock your phone down and you can not root and get custom ROMS.

best way to root your phone?

go with the manual root...but read before you do it..

as for as ROMs ..start with a 1.5 ROM ..i suggest pancake 0.1 and use SetCPU with it..you'll love that ROM ..

once you get tired of pancake ...go with either Fresh 2.0d or Damage Control 2.07 ...both are great roms and i flash back and forth from those two..

I keep pancake 0.1 as my backup rom just in case something wrong goes down the line with 2.1 ROMs ...but for now...DC and Fresh ROMs have no issues at all..

Will having a 2.1 ROM and later getting the 2.1 update mess up my phone?

I rooted my hero, used fresh etc.

It was a pain, I don't think I gained a lot. I did timing with my wife's hero to compare, the rooted phone was faster but not by much.

Eventually my phone crashed and I went back to stock. I am waiting for stock 2.1 to come out.

It was an interesting and educational process, but not worth it for me but I can see why some would like it.

No.. i dont believe it would mess up your phone.
Once rooted and ROMed...
You can always go back to stock... and unrooted...

As a last resort.. if you dont like Rooted/ROMed...
You can get your MSL (a unique six digit number for your phone) from sprint...
and do a Hardware Reset.. to put it back to default like when you first unboxed the Hero!

Putting the new official 2.1 upgrade from sprint, when it comes out...It might lock down the phone so that it can not be rooted again...

Good choice, IMHO. :D I think the 2.1 Sprint update will be good, but even better as a basis for future ROM designs with even more features.

Hang in there --- ;)

I got really frustrated trying to root it so I gave up. Basically everything is giving me problems including htc sync for some weird reason. I really dont want to lose everything so I want to make sure its all backed up and I dont know how to do that.

P.S the only method I have actually tried is the method found by blampars on android forums.

I had found one on youtube that seemed very good explained but it was acting up on me with the files. One of them were turning out corrupt for some reason.

The 2.1 update is probably gonna take another 3 years to come out lol so I really wanted to get this root going and maybe a good rom to get things up and running faster.

well, that link has both methods (auto-rooter and manual method) :p

I suggest starting from scratch and doing the auto method (assuming you're on windows), by copying and pasting the code into the command module. Make sure USB debugging is ON, and that the phone is connected to your computer, but not mounted.

In other words, go to that post, scroll down to "Manually rooting your phone", and begin from there at Step 1. It will work, it always does (barring some really weird technical problem)

I did do the manual method, i get stuck on code 13 of step 7. It wont find it for some reason.

I auto rooted my sprint hero today using Kitchen then flashed my personalized cooked Fresh. I have not had much time to play around with it yet but I can already tell my battery consumption has slightly improved and responsiveness is a bit faster. I am happy with the transitions and using the auto root was pretty simple. Thanks Flipz.

Will try auto root tomorrow. What did you use to backup everything?
